After a difficult season as well as a difficult tournament so far, Mirra Andreeva is finally enjoying some on-court success as she finds herself into the semi-finals. Now, the ninth seed will aim to capitalise on her run in Madrid and book her place into another WTA 1000 final. Standing in Andreeva’s way is Hailey Baptiste who continued her stunning tournament in Spain so far by winning a last set tiebreak over world number one Aryna Sabalenka to reach the last four in Madrid.

It’s been a rough season for Andreeva but a win over Leylah Fernandez ensured Andreeva is back into the latter stages of a big WTA 1000 event.
Having been in a Roland Garros semi-final before, Andreeva will fancy her chances of another deep run in Paris and will look to build some momentum heading into the second Grand Slam of the year.
Next up for Andreeva is Baptiste who secured the best win of her career by knocking out defending champion Sabalenka in a thrilling contest.
The American has consistently been on the rise and is looking to continue that surge by securing a first WTA 1000 final of her career.
After her quarter-final win Andreeva admitted she cannot stop smiling as she looks to ahead to the semi-finals.
“I’m so happy I cannot take the smile away from my face,” Andreeva told the WTA website.
“I’m extremely happy about the way I played and the result. It wouldn’t be a perfect birthday if I would lose today. I really didn’t want that to happen, and I was trying to give everything I had to be in a good mood tomorrow.
“I felt like I did a better job today. Still, obviously at some points I was pretty emotional as well. But I do feel like it’s a tennis match, and sometimes obviously something can happen. The most important is how you handle it, and how you reset for the next point.”
Meanwhile Baptiste was satisfied with the adjustments she made from the defeat in Miami and is looking for revenge on Andreeva after losing their only previous meeting.
“I played her a few weeks ago and it was kind of a close match,” Baptiste stated to the WTA website.
“I just got broken once in each set. So I had a better idea of how to play her, and how I should play, adjustments I needed to make. So I think I just went in trying to play my game, still doing the same things that I’ve been doing, but I had a few adjustments I needed to make from the last time we played.
“Somebody else that I played before and lost to. A little bit of a revenge tour, I guess. I’m looking to go out there and play my game again and get another win.”
Andreeva will use the backhand to dictate the rallies from the baseline and will need to return aggressively on the second serve.
Meanwhile, Baptiste will use the dropshot to move Andreeva into the net and force tactical errors from the ninth seed.
It will be a tussle between two confident players but Baptiste’ variety and confidence makes her slight favourite here.
Prediction: Baptiste in three sets.

It’s been a sensational tournament for Marta Kostyuk who is yet to drop a set so far in Madrid. The Ukrainian has knocked out some big names and now aims to make a major statement by reaching the final in Madrid and reaching a first WTA 1000 final. Next up for Kostyuk is Anastasia Potapova after the Austrian defeated Karolina Pliskova to become the first lucky loser to reach a WTA 1000 semi-final.

It’s been an incredible week for Kostyuk who is into the semi-finals of Madrid for the first time in her career.
The Ukrainian is starting to fulfil her potential and is on a big winning streak on clay as she targets a place in the final.
Standing in Kostyuk’s way is Potapova who has backed up her win over Elena Rybakina by knocking out Pliskova.
The Austrian is the first lucky loser to reach a WTA 1000 semi-final and now has a place in the final in her sights.
Speaking ahead of the semi-finals, Kostyuk was happy with her strategy in the quarter-finals.
“Conditions were incredibly difficult for both of us,” Kostyuk stated to the WTA website.
“It was very windy, very cold and I felt like we started to gain some (momentum) only towards the end of the first set. Until then, I think we both weren’t sure where the ball was going sometimes.
“But I’m happy that I did my strategy today very well.”
Meanwhile, Potapova is relishing being given a second chance as she aims to reach the final in Madrid.
“That’s what makes our sport so beautiful,” Potapova said to the WTA website.
“I was given a second chance and now I’m here, I’m speechless, I’m super happy and, well, there is nothing better that could happen with me in my life at the moment. It’s just a little explosion of the emotions inside.
“I couldn’t manage my nerves at that time, but it seems like this tournament keeps giving me second chances and I keep using them.”
Kostyuk will aim to be aggressive on the forehand side as she will need to return consistently well.
Meanwhile, Potapova will serve aggressively and use her backhand to pin Kostyuk behind the baseline.
This should be a tight match but Potapova’s serve could be a big factor in deciding who makes the final.
Prediction: Potapova in three sets.
