England bowler Ollie Robinson and Sussex teammate Jack Carson pulled off two of the most remarkable innings by lower order batters in recent memory on day one of a County Championship match at The Oval.

After being sent in to bat by Surrey on a pitch that could have blended in with the outfield if not for crease markings, Sussex were reeling at 7/92.

Surrey seamer Jordan Clark nabbed a five-wicket haul before lunch as the hosts’ bowlers ran riot before Sussex’s No.9 Carson and No.10 Robinson smashed centuries to flip the Division One contest on its head.

Carson received valuable support from No.8 Fynn Hudson-Prentice (53) as the duo combined for a 75-run stand to lift the visitors to 8/167.

Things turned truly bonkers once Sussex captain Robinson came to the crease, however.

The 20-Test seamer combined with Carson for a 173-run ninth wicket partnership – only five runs shy of Sussex’s record for the second last wicket.

Twenty-five year old spinner Carson has a first-class average with the bat of 23.21 from 67 matches, while Robinson averages 19.80 in first-class cricket, higher than his Test mark of 14.64.

But those numbers did not stop the bowlers flaying their counterparts – which included one-Test pace bowler Matthew Fisher, Australian white ball seamer Sean Abbott and England white ball left armer Reece Topley – to all parts of the iconic venue.

Although they did ride their luck with Carson dropped on 13 by Surrey debutant Adam Thomas, running back at mid-wicket.

While Robinson was put down by former England vice-captain Ollie Pope at slip on 21.

Carson cracked 14 boundaries before he eventually departed for 105 from 149 balls, caught behind by England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, who is unusually taking the gloves for Surrey due to Ben Foakes’ injury, which he sustained bowling during their last match which petered out to a draw.

With only No.11 Henry Crocombe (1*) for company, Robinson pushed on to reach his second first-class century with a six over deep mid-wicket – his first of the innings.

Remarkably, the 32-year-old’s previous hundred came on his Sussex debut 11 years ago.

Once the milestone was reached, Robinson declared the innings on 9/358.

Former Test openers Rory Burns and Dom Sibley then reached stumps unscathed at 0/19.

It was largely batting day across England, but several of their current Test top order did not cash-in as they would have liked.

Joe Root fell for 33 as Yorkshire were knocked over for 162 before Somerset reached stumps at 3/201 in reply.

Australian quick Jhye Richardson opened the bowling for Yorkshire and had figures of 1/54 from 12 overs.

Batting at No.3, England opener Ben Duckett made 77 – his third straight half-century – as Nottinghamshire closed day one against Leicestershire at 4/405.

In Division Two, Duckett’s Test opening partner Zak Crawley was bowled for 44 – his best score of the season – as Kent made 352.

Tasmania’s Caleb Jewell made it to stumps 8 not out with Derbyshire 0/24 in reply.
