Australia’s Adam Scott charged 38 places up the leaderboard as world No.4 Cameron Young maintained his strong lead in the third round of the Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral’s Blue Monster.

Young moved to 15-under through 54 holes with a two-under par 70, six shots clear of Scottie Scheffler, Si Woo Kim and Kristoffer Reitan.

Scott’s six-under par 66 was only bettered by Michael Kim’s 65, however, in the race for low round of the day honours.

The Australian veteran struggled in the opening two rounds but jumped 3-under overall in a share of 23rd as a result of his excellent third round.

Scott could not help but think of the two penalty shots he incurred in the first round for hitting the wrong ball, however.

The former world No.1 could not recall another time in his 26-year professional career where has made such a blunder.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s such a silly thing to do. I think it’s the first time I’ve ever done it in my career,” Scott said.

“That’s probably one of those things everyone ends up doing once. But an odd set of circumstances leading up to me not checking it, which I think I’ve done thousands of times.

“To take two lumps there was, is tough, especially as you sit here now in the weekend and thinking if you’re two better you would be doing so well in the tournament.

“But golf can be cruel at times, and I’ve experienced plenty of other tough things on the course, and you just have to get on with it and do the best you can.

“Luckily, it was like on the 8th hole and I had the rest of the day to try and salvage something out of it.”

No one hit more greens in regulation than Scott in the third round as he missed only two, and successfully scrambled on both occasions.

The 45-year-old, who triumphed a decade ago when the PGA Tour last came to Doral, has been in sensational form with his irons and wedges this week.

He is ranked fourth in strokes gained approach play across the opening three rounds.

While the veteran continues to defy his age by hitting the third longest drive of the week – a 379 yard (345.5 metres) bomb.

A low round reassured Scott that he is on the right track two weeks out from the next major, the PGA Championship.

“Yeah, I mean it was windy earlier today, but still being off early was an advantage probably,” Scott said.

“So, nice to take advantage of that and bogey-free around this course is really a good round. So luckily there was six birdies to go along with it and it’s a good looking score.

“It’s going to be a little tougher out there this afternoon, for sure, judging the wind. But happy to put a good round on the board and I feel like I’ve been playing with better than my scores the first two days, and kind of reassured myself I am today.”

World No.1 Scheffler presents the biggest threat to Young claiming a second victory of the year.

Scheffler edged one shot closer to his Ryder Cup teammate with a third round 69, but despite loving the chase knows he will need something freakish to win.

“Yeah, the tournament’s in his hands right now,” Scheffler said.

“I can go out and have a really good round, and if he has another really good round he’s going to be a tough guy to catch. All I can do is go out and try and have a great round and see where that leaves me.”

If Young can old firm, he will complete a Florida double having won The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in March.

He also played alongside Rory McIlroy in the final round of The Masters last month and finished in a share of third.

“I think today was kind of a good test run of how tomorrow will be,” Young said.

“I’m sure it will not be as easy as I want it to be. Sounds like the weather’s not going to be great. It will be a fight from the beginning and just looking to execute the way that I did for the most part today. Just keep it in front of me and try to make some putts.”
