From the glittering sea views of Monte-Carlo to the thin-air intensity of Madrid, and on to the storied courts of Rome, the trio of clay-court ATP Masters 1000 events is an exciting part of the season for players and fans alike.
On a surface that demands patience, physical endurance and tactical precision, the clay-court swing is a unique stretch during which the best of the best often rise to the occasion and separate themselves from the pack.
Among the 29 members of the ATP No. 1 Club, a select few have turned this challenge — earning clay-court Masters 1000 glory — into a showcase of dominance. Unsurprisingly, Rafael Nadal leads that list by a significant margin.
ATP No. 1 Club: Clay-Court ATP Masters 1000 Leaderboard
Nadal, Nearly Untouchable
The Spaniard captured 26 clay-court ATP Masters 1000 titles across two decades of supremacy. Nadal finished his career with a stunning 200-27 match record at the clay ATP Masters 1000 events, suffering just one defeat more than the number of trophies he lifted.
With his punishing forehand, relentless defence and unmatched comfort on the surface, Nadal turned the clay-court ATP Masters 1000 tournaments into his own personal playground. Nadal reigned supreme in The Principality, winning Monte-Carlo a record 11 times. He also holds the record in Madrid and Rome, where he won five and 10 titles, respectively. When Nadal won in Madrid in 2005, the tournament took place on indoor hard courts.
In 2010, Nadal earned a hat-trick, sweeping the three clay-court ATP Masters 1000 events. “Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would win all three of these big events,” he said after the run, according to The Guardian.
Djokovic’s Dominance
Another all-time great in Novak Djokovic is second on the list of most clay ATP Masters 1000 titles. The Serbian has amassed 11 clay-court Masters 1000 titles: Six in Rome, three in Madrid and two in Monte-Carlo.
During Djokovic’s historic 2011 season, during which he tallied a 41-match winning streak from the beginning of the year to the Roland Garros semi-finals, the 101-time tour-level titlist triumphed in Madrid and Rome, where he beat great rival Nadal in both championship matches. “I’m amazed with the way I’m playing,” Djokovic said after the 2011 Rome final, which he played just one day removed from a three-hour marathon victory against Andy Murray.
Djokovic’s most recent clay-court ATP Masters 1000 title came in Rome in 2022. The Belgrade native owns a record 40 trophies at ATP Masters 1000 level.
Federer’s Footprint
Flashback to May 2002 and a 20-year-old Roger Federer cracked the Top 10 of the PIF ATP Rankings for the first time after winning Hamburg, where he claimed four of his six clay-court ATP Masters 1000 titles. From 2004 to the 2008 final, Federer built a 21-match winning streak in the German city.
The Swiss triumphed three times in Madrid, including when the tournament was played on indoor hard courts in 2006 and blue clay in 2012. The winner of 103 tour-level titles throughout his illustrious career, Federer twice beat his rival Nadal in a clay-court final; 2007 Hamburg and 2009 Madrid.
Muster Masters Clay
Thomas Muster, one of the most feared clay-court standouts of the 1990s, captured six clay-court Masters 1000 titles. Using his heavy groundstrokes to overwhelm opponents, Muster won Rome and Monte-Carlo three times each.
In 1995 and 1996, Muster won both Monte-Carlo and Rome. Muster, who also triumphed at Roland Garros in 1995, had rallied from two sets to love down in that year’s Monte-Carlo final against Boris Becker. The Austrian won 12 tour-level titles in 1995, which helped him reach World No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings in February 1996.
Alcaraz Already Among The Best
Turning 23 years old on 5 May, Carlos Alcaraz has already claimed four clay-court ATP Masters 1000 titles, showcasing his blend of explosive athleticism with creative shotmaking. True to his Spanish roots, Alcaraz is at home on the surface, gliding into heavy groundstrokes with ease and producing his trademark drop shots at crucial moments to wrong foot his opponent.
Alcaraz’s first triumph at a clay ATP Masters 1000 tournament was a memorable one. At the Mutua Madrid Open in 2022, he downed Nadal in the quarter-finals and the next day returned to oust Djokovic in a third-set tie-break. Alcaraz won the title and successfully defended his crown in 2023. The No. 2 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, Alcaraz won Monte-Carlo and Rome in 2025.
