Australia’s decision to establish a national tripartite AI Employment and Workplaces Forum is timely and welcome. Bringing government, employers and unions together reflects a shared recognition that the success of artificial intelligence will be measured not just by technological capability, but by whether it delivers fair, inclusive outcomes for workers and society. It is also a practical way to advance the ambitions of the National AI Plan, particularly in its focus on spreading economic opportunity while managing risk.
AI is already reshaping work across finance, media, health, education, manufacturing, and the public sector. The pace of adoption is accelerating, and with it, the scale of change inside Australian workplaces. The question now is not whether AI will be adopted, but how, and on whose terms.
