Todd Payten was fuming at his players for blowing a lead with their captain hobbling and ruining Jason Taumalolo’s milestone match in a 33-30 Golden Point loss in Round 10.

The Cowboys looked to have the game won at 30-22 in the 75th minute before they conceded two late tries to force golden point and then conceded a three point play to Mitchell Moses to lose the unlosable game.

“You want my honest answer, we showed a lack of respect to our most capped player.” Payten said.

“I felt we showed a lack of respect to our captain with eight minutes to go, trying to push passes when he’s on one leg.

“Showed a lack of respect to the ball with 18 errors and got exactly what was coming, so really angry right at the minute.”

Payten was gutted for Taumalolo, who passed Johnathan Thurston to become the most capped Cowboy of all-time with his 295th game.

“I haven’t seen him, he’s still seeing friends and family and what he does well is interact with our fans after games,” Payten said.

“I’m just disappointed for him. He hasn’t won a milestone game and we just gifted it to the opposition.”

Payten was irate at his team for pushing passes in their own half when they had the game in their hands.

“We wanted our back five to get behind the ball quickly to spread their line, but it wasn’t necessarily a game plan to shift the ball like we did,” Payten said.

“I thought when we’re playing with a mindset to go through them, it was causing them some grief.

“But we made too many backfield errors and then just found some different ways. We had eight points up with seven minutes to go.

We had three sets of each to do and like I said, Tommy was hobbling around and we’re still trying to push passes coming out of our own end.

“To Parramatta’s credit, they played pretty tough. They found a way to win and we found several ways to lose and that’s what frustrates me.”

The loss was compounded by an injury to Dearden, who could miss Origin I depending on scans on his injured ankle.

“He’ll go for a scan tomorrow, it’s his ankle,” Payten said.

“He’s a tough kid, wanted to stick it out, so fingers crossed.”

Payten was pressed if he made the wrong call to keep Dearden on the field.

“I was just talking to him about it and he said he should have come off, but he wanted to run it out,” Payten said.

“The message was coming up to us that he was good to go. It was clear he wanted to stick it out, but we all got it wrong.”

The Cowboys also lost Soni Luke to a knee injury in a double blow.

“He’s in a brace, he’s done a medial, so a scan tomorrow will dictate how long, but it’s going to be a week or two at least,” Payten said.

Payten also revealed Reed Mahoney carried an injury into the game.

“He was in some doubt this week too, he had an operation last weekend with an infection in his hand, so he had a real desire to play tonight, which I like and played pretty well,” Payten said of Mahoney.

Cowboys skipper Reuben Cotter was equally disappointed he and his team couldn’t make it a more memorable night for Taumalolo.

“Just obviously disappointed that we couldn’t get it done for Jason and we didn’t really give ourselves a chance with that many errors,” Cotter said.

“And as a collective, we just didn’t have respect for the ball and disappointed in myself and probably how we started the game and how I started the game with a mindset of just passing instead of just going forward, so a disappointing loss.”
