The outfielder was not part of the triple-A Buffalo Bisons lineup for Wednesday’s game against Lehigh Valley, less than 24 hours after Blue Jays manager John Schneider said the team’s hope was for Springer to see game action in the next few days.
Springer, who has been sidelined since being hit in the head by a pitch on July 28, was back doing baseball activities with the Blue Jays on Tuesday, Schneider said.
The 35-year-old was placed on the seven-day concussion IL on Aug. 1.
Springer was then sent down to Buffalo for what was supposed to be a brief rehab stint, but he has yet to clear protocols for return to play.
In 101 games, Springer is slashing .291/.383/.506 with 18 home runs and 57 RBIs.
In addition to a potential Springer appearance, the Bisons will send some intriguing players to the mound this week.
Rehabbing starter Alek Manoah will get the nod on Wednesday, with the aim to throw around 70-75 pitches.
Blue Jays top prospect Trey Yesavage will make his first triple-A start on Thursday, followed by trade-deadline addition Shane Bieber going Friday.
