AFL fans are sending messages of support to Sam Skinner after the former Brisbane Lions and Port Adelaide player was forced to announce his immediate retirement at age 28. Skinner’s career was plagued by injuries and concussions, and he recently suffered a fractured eye socked and concussion while playing for South Adelaide in the SANFL.
The 28-year-old told his South Adelaide teammates this week that doctors had advised him to call it quits. “I’ve had a number of (head) scans and they’ve all looked positive, which is good,” Skinner said.

“But footy puts me at risk of being exposed to another concussion, and next time I may not be as fortunate. I haven’t really had a choice, but I’m going to put my health first and hang up the boots.
“It’s not how I pictured my career ending. But I’ve been talking to [South Adelaide staff] over the past few weeks and they kept reiterating to me that not many people get to choose how they finish their career. When I put things into perspective, I’m very grateful for my journey.”
Skinner was drafted by Brisbane with pick 47 of the 2015 AFL draft. He was limited to just three AFL games for the Lions from 2016 to 2020 due to three knee reconstructions.
He was picked up by Port Adelaide in 2022 and played two games for the Power. Skinner made his mark in the SANFL across 72 games and 34 goals for South Adelaide, and was co-captain of the club in 2024 and 2025.

South Adelaide coach Jarrad Wright said: “Sam has been such a trademark player for the side throughout his journey at the club. His selflessness, leadership and fierce competitiveness on the field have not only defined him as a person, but have also helped shape the next generation of players and shown them exactly what league football is all about.
“Whilst it is an emotional and sad way for a career with so much more to give to come to an end, the health, wellbeing and future of life with his beautiful family must remain the priority. We wish Sam, Char and Ollie all the very best for what lies ahead and look forward to having them remain involved at the club as our journey continues.”
Fans also paid tribute on social media. One person wrote: “His 2021 season will long be remembered at the Panthers as one of the best in our 150 year history and hopefully the path you have helped create, will see the rewards in 2026.”
Another commented: “Sorry to hear that news. Sam, you will be sadly missed from the field, but your health comes first! Thank you for your loyalty and some exciting football over your time with The Panthers.”
