Girl group NewJeans has been hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit in the United States, Billboard reported on Friday.

Four composers, including songwriter Audrey Armacost, filed a lawsuit against NewJeans and their agency ADOR, seeking royalty distribution. They claim that the group’s May 2024 release, “How Sweet,” copied key elements from their demo, “One of a Kind.”

The songwriters argue that they had previously pitched “One of a Kind” to NewJeans, but it was not selected. Then, “How Sweet” was released, and the first verse melody and overall composition are substantially similar to “One of a Kind,” according to the report.

ADOR immediately denied the infringement, saying that it confirmed with BANA, the production team behind the track, that there was no plagiarism.

“ADOR and the members will respond to the lawsuit in accordance with BANA’s position,” the agency said.
