BATHURST 1000-winner Todd Kelly has fallen agonisingly short of claiming the Australian Offshore Superboat Championship off Adelaide over the weekend, missing the outright title by only two points after four rounds.
For Kelly, some early-season propeller-related failures were costly in his first full season in the sport, while for the title decider, he combined with his son, Mason.
Regardless of the result, Kelly Snr still enjoys working on his new form of racing.
“It’s actually a good therapy, just to put the laptop and the mobile phone down for an hour or two here and there, and do a bit of work on the boat, on the engines, and have a spanner in the hand,” Kelly said on the coverage.
“I certainly enjoy it still.”
For the first two of three races, Todd on the throttle partnered up with regular co-driver Stuart Eustice, however, for the final race, he enlisted son Mason aboard the MOJO outfit.
Coming into the weekend, MOJO essentially required a clean sweep of the race wins, and they went mightily close.
In Saturday’s opening 12-lap race, MOJO beat home the combination and Mick and Jason Kelly aboard Hornet Racing by only 5 seconds after 30 minutes of racing.
With 70 points still on the table heading into Sunday’s final pair of races, MOJO trailed Hornet Racing by 37.
The second race on Sunday morning saw Kelly and Eustice hold on by only 4-seconds over Hornet Racing, setting up a thrilling decider.
However, when Hornet Racing suffered a technical issue pre-race, the MOJO squad were upstaged by first-time winner Venturi Offshore, with its crew of Antony De Fina and Matt Kelly sealing the win by 4 seconds, relegating MOJO to second in points.
