For the first time in a decade, Australian fashion gathered on the Sydney Harbour.  After a fitting Welcome to Country and dance, the sun christened the start of Australian Fashion Week, as presented by Shark Beauty. From 11–15 May at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) as its central venue, activations and presentations will continue across Sydney all week long.

For the first day, transeasonal dressing reigned. Pops of colour and sharp suiting were championed by attendees. We saw fur, ballet flats, checkered overcoats and angled blazers. Cropped spring jackets, as predicted in our own outerwear trend report returned in spades. Collared shirts of every colour and traditional First Nations attire made a vibrant case for the mid-morning, as guests filed into the Museum of Contemporary Art.

At the opening shows Buluyy Mirrii and Van Ermel Scherer, attendees were clad in faux fur coats, a rainbow of leather jackets, matching sets and linen. It might only be the first day, but the Australian fashion set upped the ante, setting the mood and scene for the rest of the week to come.

The second day kicked off bright and early at Tamarama Beach with the Commas runway presentation, ushering in beach-appropriate ensembles, graphic tees, unbuttoned shirts and belted trenches to shield from the wind.

Here, we bring you the best street style we spotted at day one of Australian Fashion Week.
