That’s according to Code Sports, who reports Makasini has signed a two-year deal through until the end of the 2029 season.

It’s a huge boost for the Tigers, who have fully blooded Makasini this season after he made his debut in the final round of 2025.

The dual-sport young gun admitted in the pre-season that the allure of rugby union was still there, with international clubs interested.

However, this latest decision means a switch back to the 15-man code won’t happen anytime soon.

Because of a foot injury, Makasini hasn’t played since round seven.

The 19-year-old is due back in about a fortnight’s time.

KNIGHTS SECURE SIGNATURES OF KEY DUO

In a huge week for the Newcastle Knights, the club have announced the retention of in-form winger Greg Marzhew and promising back rower Jermaine McEwen.

Marzhew resisted interest from the Cowboys to ink a massive three-year extension with the Knights that will keep him at the club until the end of 2029.

The winger had a down season in 2025 but has enjoyed a resurgence this year.

Playing on the end of a red-hot Knights backline, Marzhew has crossed for 13 tries in nine games to sit third on the 2026 try-scoring list.

He’s also among the game’s best metre-eating wingers, averaging 184 per game while his 16 line breaks is second in the NRL.

“Greg has been in stellar form, he’s thriving outside Bradman, and we’re pleased he has recommitted to the Club,” Knights head of recruitment Peter O’Sullivan said via a club-issued statement.

McEwen, 21, has also signed a multi-year deal, his running until the end of 2028.

He’s become an integral part on the right edge for the Knights, starting in every game this season and forming one of the league’s most exciting edge forward pairings with Dylan Lucas.

The exciting thing is we do not know Jermaine’s ceiling. What we do know is he will keep getting better under the coaching he is receiving, and we cannot wait to see his continued development as an NRL player,” O’Sullivan said.

SEA EAGLES LOCK DOWN PROMISING PROP

The good news has continued at Manly, withe the club announcing that they have signed a promising young middle forward to a multi-year deal.

19-year-old Simione Laiafi has inked a deal that will keep him in the northern beaches until the end of the 2028 season.

Laiafi has made two NRL appearance so far, both of which were off the bench.

After playing in 13 minutes in his debut against the Roosters, Laiafi featured in 19 minutes two weeks later in the win over the Dragons.

“He’s got a big future, I’m confident of that,” coach Kieran Foran said via a club-issued statement.

“Simi has worked extremely hard over the past few years to earn this new opportunity.

“He’s young, athletic, powerful, and keen to develop his craft.”
