CENTRAL POINT, Ore. – A local favorite professional boxing show is back in Medford Saturday. The Medford Armory is hosting the Rogue Valley Rumble XV.

The event will feature music, food, and of course multiple fighters, including some from Southern Oregon. Scottie Stockman lives in Medford and has been competing in professional combat sports for over ten years. He said, “I think fighting is the only thing that is mental, physical, emotional and spiritual.” Leon Cavalli lives in Cave Junction and he added, “Everything else goes away, all your problems in life, everything. It’s just you’re living in the moment entirely.”

These local fighters are putting on the finishing touches in their game. “It’s late nights and early mornings,” Stockman said. Abraham Martin from Medford is also competing. “Train hard and slowly let the weight drop off naturally,” he added. They’ve spent weeks training, dieting and refining their craft, on top of balancing everything else, “Go to work, get off, I’ve got to pick up my kid, take her to soccer and I got to squeeze in workouts,” Martin said. “I already feel like a winner already you know but the fight is just extra credit.”

Cavalli said sticking to that regiment takes a lot of discipline and dedication, “Those days where you’re getting off work and you don’t want to go to the gym, but you choose to anyway.”

All three of the local fighters have competed for several years, it’s something all of them say they love to do. But being able to do it in their backyard at Medford is an added bonus. “Here in Southern Oregon, we’ve got great fight fans, everybody always loves great fights. They always show out and we couldn’t do it without them,” Mike Wilson said. He’s a former decorated heavyweight boxer and has been putting the Rogue Valley Rumble on for years. He said it’s about giving local fighters a platform to showcase their skills in their own backyard,

“Father time always gets the best of you, so you can’t do this forever and you know it’s just kind of my way to still be a part of it,” Wilson said. “All these guys they put a lot of work in, this is a lifestyle that you got to live and take serious.”

Wilson said attendees can expect exciting fights like Cavalli who is rematching an opponent. The first fight, a little over a year ago, Cavalli’s only career victory by decision, but he’s looking to put a stamp on it this time.

“It was a good fight,” Cavalli said. “I’m prepared to make him drown; I’m going to try and push the pressure. He got really tired in the fifth round of our last fight, I think if I put a pace on it, he’s going to quit before the end of the fight.”

At this point in their training, all the fighters are looking forward to making weight and being able to rehydrate and rest before the show starts. Stockman said there’s no feeling quite like walking into the ring,

“It’s a very honest moment, like when you step in there you realize like, ‘what do I have?’ There’s no lying to yourself once you’re in there.”

Fights are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., Saturday at the Medford Armory. More information can be found online.
