The Philadelphia Phillies are making headway after a slow start. They have won seven out of their last ten games, with an 11-9 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday. A major catalyst has been, of course, Kyle Schwarber, who hit his 20th home run yesterday.

Altogether, he went 3-for-5 with three hits, two home runs, and five RBIs.

In addition, he etched his place into the history books by being alongside two 60+ home run hitters to hit 20 home runs in fewer games, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today. He did so in 45 games. The two were Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds.

In the historic 1998 season, McGwire hit 20 home runs in 43 games. Eventually, he set a then-single-season record with 70 home runs. Three years later, Bonds hit 20 home runs in 42 games, leading to 73 home runs, still the single-season record.

However, McGwire and Bonds’ achievements have been called into question due to ties to steroid use. As a result, they have not been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

In June 2024, Schwarber became the fastest player in history to hit 60 home runs in 172 games.

Schwarber had a stellar season in 2025, in which he hit a career high of 56 home runs. His previous high total was 47 in 2023. Currently, Schwarber has 360 career home runs.

Meanwhile, Schwarber is batting .237 with 40 hits, 20 home runs, and 35 RBIs. The Phillies are 22-23, nine games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League East.

The Phillies are playing a three-game series against the Pirates at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Afterward, they head back home for a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds.
