A woman in her 60s lay dead in a house for weeks before being found, police say.

A man in his 50s from the same address has been arrested after the discovery in New Town in Tasmania in capital Hobart.

Detective Inspector David Gill said the woman was found dead in the home in Lissadell Court yesterday afternoon.

Police say it’s “believed the woman has been deceased within the residence for several weeks.”

“At this stage police are treating the woman’s death as suspicious, however, we are keeping an open mind as to the possibility the woman’s death may be the result of natural causes,” Gill said.

The man was held for a mental health assessment.

The discovery was made by somebody who visited the home and went in, finding the door open.

Police were called, and a crime scene was declared.

“While a formal identification has not yet been undertaken, we believe the woman is aged in her 60s and she also resided at the Lissadell Court address,” Gill said.

“An autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow morning to determine the cause of the woman’s death.”
