Adam Simpson has officially ruled himself out of the Carlton coaching search.

Simpson, who’s been working as a part-time coaching consultant at Ikon Park, said last week he wouldn’t put his hand up for the vacancy after Michael Voss’ resignation.

But Simpson left the door ajar for a potential change of heart later in the year.

Speaking on Fox Footy’s AFL 360 on Wednesday night, however, Simpson put a line through his name given “it doesn’t feel right” after a “very brief” conversation with the Blues.

“I’m not going to put my hand up for any type of role with Carlton, from a coaching point of view,” Simpson began on the program.

“I think I said it last week, really. It’s difficult when you’re working at the club and mentoring someone.

“It doesn’t feel right.

“So, people can stop asking me questions on it, I take myself out of contention.”

The Eagles 2018 premiership coach said talks with Carlton didn’t go far.

“A very, very brief conversation and it was a polite decline with where I’m at, at the moment,” Simpson added.

“You can ask questions of others.

“For me at the moment, it just didn’t feel right.

“When you’re working with someone and the coaching staff. To come in and try and, yeah, that’s not quite right for me.

“But I’m sure whoever takes that job will have a good career.”

Sydney premiership coach John Longmire last week refused to rule himself out for the Blues gig.

“It’s not a simple yes or no answer. It’s not about that,” Longmire said om AFL 360 last Wednesday.

“For me, these things tend to become clear over a period of time. I’m happy to let that time play out.

“I understand the questioning and I understand there’s a bit of interest in it.

“But I’m not in the position at the moment in my own head to ascertain whether it’s a yes or no. I really don’t think it’s appropriate for me to say that if I don’t feel I’m ready to answer that.”

Longmire and Simpson are seen as two of the best candidates on the market, if the Blues went down the route of picking an experienced coach.

A conversation with Simpson at least shows an openness from Carlton to assess all contenders, as opposed to just untried coaches.

Simpson coached West Coast in 242 AFL games from 2014 to 2024.
