The 59-year-old underwent emergency surgery at Westmead Hospital, where he remains under observation.

In a statement, Moore thanked the “quick response from the ambulance paramedics who were amazing and the staff here at Westmead who go above and beyond”. He added, “I look forward to being back soon and [I’m] thankful to all those who have reached out with their well wishes.”

It is not yet known when Moore will return to the commentary box. He has led the ABC’s rugby league coverage since joining from 2GB in 2015, following earlier stints at 2UE and 2SM during a four-decade media career. He has hosted his own shows and has worked across a wide range of sports since making the move to the ABC.

ABC Sport content director Tim Verrall described Moore as “one of the most respected and loved broadcasters in the country”. He said the team was “enormously relieved” that Moore was receiving the care he needed. “We look forward to welcoming him back when he’s recovered and we send our thoughts to Andrew and his family,” he said.

Moore’s recent schedule included four NRL matches in the previous round, with travel to both Melbourne and Newcastle. His co-commentator Luke Lewis said Moore’s absence would be keenly felt. “Andrew is the best in the business. We are going to miss him in the next little period but his first priority has to be getting his health right. I know he will be back and at the top of his game again soon,” Lewis said.

Former coach and long-time colleague Matt Elliott added: “Andrew’s commitment to what he does, the people he works with and our listeners reflects the quality of person that he is.”

Listeners have also been quick to express their support. On Reddit’s rugby league forum, one fan wrote: “Listening to Grandstand is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Hope he’s ok.” Another said Moore was “as good as rugby league gets”, while a Parramatta supporter described him as “one of my favourites. Iconic voice.”

Some referred to his trademark phrases, with comments such as “Strikes it. Likes it. He’s kicked the goal!” and “Thank goodness it’s not yet game set bingo.” Others shared how his calls form part of their weekly ritual. “My six-year-old likes to join me in the garage for the 2pm game when I’m working on something and we’ll listen to the game on the ABC,” one wrote. Another added: “Many nights when my kids are holding the TV down I listen to him on the wireless.”

Several listeners called him the “voice of footy”, praising his mix of accuracy and humour. “The best in the business. Get well soon champion,” one fan posted, while another said, “He helms a great team, on both sides of the mic. Best wishes to him and his fam.”

Moore’s versatility was also noted, with one comment reading: “The best NRL commentator in the business, and he also does the cricket in the summer. I’m really sorry to hear this, but glad to hear that he’s recovering well.”

The weight of support from colleagues and fans reflects the impact he has had on the game’s coverage.
