Showers ‘coming back’ to Australia’s east coast after brief dry and sunny spell granted wet weather reprieve

Showers are set to return to Australia’s east coast following a brief patch of sunshine which disrupted days of rain.

Skies were mostly clear across the eastern coastline on Wednesday after days of wet weather pummelled parts of the country and dampened major cities such as Sydney.

However, the reprieve in soggy conditions is not set to last for many Australians.

Examining the forecast ahead, Sky News Weather Senior Meteorologist Rob Sharpe said the wet weather was “coming back”.

“We saw nine days in a row of showers on the east coast then a day of sunshine up and down the entire length of the east coast on Wednesday,” he said.

“But for Thursday, some showers are back.”

Looking more closely at where wet conditions could return, Sharpe explained showers would start by targeting the Nelson Bay area during Thursday.

“By the evening, they’re likely to filter in towards the coastline a bit further south,” he said.

He added showers are most likely from Thursday evening for Sydney and Wollongong.

“So Thursday during the day doesn’t look too bad, only a chance of showers in those locations on the beaches,” Sharpe said.

“But looking further ahead and wet weather looks even more likely on some of those following days.”

Weather forecast across AustraliaSydney

A partly cloudy day and a high chance of showers has been forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology for Sydney on Thursday.

There is a 50 per cent chance of at least two millilitres of rain for the Harbour City.

Melbourne

Melbournians are expected to see a cloudy day, with only a slight chance of a shower forecast.

The mercury is set to climb to a top of 16 degrees and drop as low as nine degrees over the course of the day.

Brisbane

The Queensland capital is expected to be mostly sunny and reach a high of 24 degrees.

Light winds and a low of 13 degrees have also been forecast on Thursday.

Perth

Perth is likely to see showers on Thursday, most likely in the afternoon or evening.

The city could also see a thunderstorm after midday.

Adelaide

A partly cloudy day with light winds has been forecast for the South Australian capital.

Adelaide is likely to record a 10-degree low and climb to a high of 20 degrees throughout the day.

Canberra

Possible morning fog and frost has been forecast for Canberra, which is set to see temperatures plummet to a low of just two degrees on Thursday.

However, a sunny day and a high of 17 degrees are also expected in the Australian Capital Territory city.
