Hugh Marks flags “less long form… more short form” content in an ABC future.

Yesterday a Deloitte Report outlined the value ABC brings to the economy and creative sector.

But managing director Hugh Marks, who recently referred to change to legacy shows for newer formats, was asked by ABC Melbourne Mornings host Raf Epstein “So, what’s going to change?”

“I think two things,” Marks responded. “One is you will see fewer, bigger, better, potentially, and what that refers to is programmes that are probably, I would say, more distinctive, more ambitious in their creativity. Maybe broader in their audience appeal.

“Certainly, things that are, more competitive with the sorts of things we’re seeing from overseas at the moment.”

Epstein pressed, “Keyword in your phrase, ‘fewer, bigger, better’ is fewer, no?”

“Well, fewer, bigger, better on that end, but then what you might see as well, obviously, there’s a whole other bunch of platforms that we can occupy these days, and we can distribute our content to…. the YouTubes and TikToks and Metas of the world,” Marks replied.

“What you might see there is a proliferation of more specialist content that really leans into the fan environments that those those platforms work really well in. So you might see more there.

“So you know, fewer, bigger, better on our screens, more content, more diversity of content on other platforms. You know, the mix of it will change, and there might be less long form, there might be more short form.

“Again, there’s a real rise in short form content at the moment, and people are engaging with that on various platforms. So again, it’s important that the ABC operates in all these places and meets audiences in the places that they’re choosing to engage with their content.”
