Just when we thought the Murdoch family feud had run out of twists, a new plotline pops up, with recently disenfranchised younger brother James set to pitch his own new-media properties against the hand-me-down legacy that older brother Lachlan inherited from father Rupert.

James has reportedly spent a tidy US$300 million on acquiring a big chunk of Vox Media’s assets, including New York magazine, Vox.com and a growing podcast network.

It’s not his first such purchase. Since ending his involvement with the Murdoch family’s media companies in 2020, James has put together a grab-bag of controlling shareholdings in several other businesses, including Robert de Niro’s film company, Tribeca Enterprises, and Art Basel, the world’s largest art fair.
