A man who reportedly raped an elderly woman in her own home in Palmerston after entering through the front door remains on the run while police appeal to the public for information.
A Northern Territory Police spokesperson said the woman in her 80s was at home in Woodroffe, outside Darwin, when the unknown man entered the property about 8:50pm on Wednesday.
The spokesperson said the man fled the scene after assaulting the woman and remains at large.
Sex Crimes Unit detectives said the man they are looking for is believed to be of Aboriginal appearance with a tall, slim build and wavy hair.
At the time, the man was wearing a light top, dark shorts and thongs.
Police have canvassed the area for CCTV and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
Speaking at a press conference this morning, NT Attorney-General Marie-Clare Boothby said she was “absolutely disgusted” by the attack.
“We need this person to be apprehended and dealt with because this kind of behaviour is not acceptable by our government,” she said.
