Marc Marquez is dominating in MotoGP with Ducati in 2025, with eight Grand Prix wins and 11 Sprint victories.
Marquez has shown Luigi Dall’Igna why Ducati have fewer titles than Yamaha and Honda, as he is the rider they have been clearly missing. Heading into the Austrian Grand Prix this weekend, he leads the championship by 120 points.
Ducati have won all but two Grand Prix in 2025, with Johann Zarco winning for Honda at Le Mans and Marco Bezzecchi taking victory for Aprilia at Silverstone. The Borgo Panigale outfit have only lost four times in the last 43 races; something that will displease Liberty Media.
The American company will be looking to grow MotoGP’s global audience and replicate the success they have enjoyed with Formula 1. Marquez’s dominance, as incredible as it is, given his struggles in the past in injury, have highlighted that changes need to be made.
Liberty must change Sprint races moving forward, with the Spaniard only losing one Saturday race in 2025 as his brother Alex took victory at Silverstone. Marquez’s performances have shown another change to the points system is needed.

As journalist Mat Oxley pointed out via Motor Sport Magazine, MotoGP has a ‘bizarre’ points system for the constructors’ championship. The five manufacturers are awarded points depending on their highest finishing rider that weekend.
With Ducati winning all but one race in 2024, they won the constructors’ title with a staggering 722, while KTM finished second with 327. After 14 races in 2025, the Borgo Panigale outfit have 430 points, with Aprilia on just 187 points in second.

As Oxley notes, the points system does not create a ‘realistic picture’ of each team’s performance. For example, at the Argentine GP this season, Ducati collected the maximum 25 points via Marquez, while their closest rival was Johann Zarco for Honda, who grabbed 10 points finishing P6.
Marquez showed exactly why the system needs changing with his title-winning 2019 season, when he single-handedly won Honda the constructors’ title. His nearest teammate was Cal Crutchlow for LCR, who finished almost 300 points behind him in ninth.
Honda would have finished second-bottom of the standings without Marquez’s points, pointing out the flaws of the current system. Oxley wonders if it would be ‘much more sensible to count the scores of each constructor’s top two finishers’ and make a bigger deal of the championship.

With six bikes on the grid (two more than any other manufacturer) Ducati stand a higher chance of winning the championship and taking points away from their rivals.
KTM’s Pit Beirer wants Liberty to make a ‘big show’ out of MotoGP, but having one manufacturer dominating will make that difficult. The constructors’ championship points system is one change, among many, that should be looked at.
Liberty are not happy with the Spanish and Italian dominance in the premier class. More than half of the grid hail from these nations, while only four riders outside of Spain and Italy have won the championship since the turn of the century.
Toprak Razgatlioglu’s arrival from World Superbikes is a step in the right direction, given his massive following in Turkey. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali says Liberty have ‘incredible’ plans for MotoGP, but it is clear that they have a lot of work to do.
