Collingwood has every right to feel ‘robbed’ of a win after vision emerged of Hawthorn appearing to breach the interchange rules during their 93-all draw at the end of last month.
The two sides played out an entertaining draw after Hawks star Dylan Moore slotted a goal on the final siren to tie the Round 8 match.
But footage and data showed the Hawks should have been called for a free kick before Moore took the shot.
In vision revealed on Channel Seven’s The Agenda Setters, the Hawks had an extra interchange rotation in the final seconds, with a 76th substitution used, over the cap of 75.
As Moore lined up his shot, captain James Sicily replaced Jack Gunston on the field.
Given the umpire hadn’t called full-time, on a technicality, the Pies should’ve been awarded a free kick and a 50-metre penalty for the breach.
Explaining what transpired, Channel 7’s Xander McGuire stated the result should have ended differently.
“The AFL has conceded this is counted as an interchange,” he said on The Agenda Setters.
“By the book, at this very moment, a 50m penalty and opposition free kick should have been paid against Hawthorn, paid towards Collingwood, and that would’ve ended the game in that very moment — which means Collingwood would have won by six points.”
The vision infuriated veteran journalist Caroline Wilson.
“It’s only a few seconds, but it would have changed the result, clearly, because Hawthorn had broken the rules by having an extra interchange,” Wilson said.
However, McGuire revealed the AFL has not conceded they made an error and stands by their count of 75, despite Champion Data – the official data provider for the AFL – showing 76.
McGuire added Collingwood has declined to publicly comment on the drama.
But Kane Cornes called for the Magpies “to protest”, with the Port Adelaide great declaring they should be awarded the win.
“The evidence is there that the result should be their win,” he said.
“And in the context of the season and how the ladder looks for Hawthorn and Collingwood, this is a major, major story.”
The Hawks (7-3-1) sit fourth on the AFL ladder while the Magpies (5-5-1) are 10th, in the last wildcard spot.
If the AFL reversed the result, Hawthorn would drop to fifth, while Collingwood would climb to ninth.
