The Kooyong Tennis Club has been plunged into more chaos with the shock resignation of CEO Ian Robson.
The former Essendon Football Club CEO had only been in the job for almost 18 months and was seen as the white knight to save the embattled private club.
But on Thursday afternoon members were sent a letter from Club president Steve Wood informing Robson had “resigned” and was clearing out his desk by the end of the week:
“Dear Members,
I wish to advise that Chief Executive Officer, Ian Robson has informed the Board of his resignation from Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club. Ian will be finishing up this week. He has led the Club through an important period of operational strengthening, Member focused service improvements, and renewed stability across all areas of the Club.
His contribution has helped lay strong foundations for the Club’s future, including transitioning to an in-house model for key Member services, strengthening the capability of the management team, and shaping the Club’s strategic direction.
On behalf of the Board, I thank Ian for his commitment to the Club and for the professionalism he has brought to the role.
The Board has asked me to step in to assist the management team while a formal search for Kooyong’s next CEO is undertaken. We will keep Members informed as the process progresses.
I look forward to seeing you around the Club. “
Kooyong has been plagued with scandals over the past years, from a misappropriation of funds that still has questions marks, mass staff resignations and a racket over inflated members fees.
Last year the exclusive club launched a much hyped $50 million redevelopment plan to mark its centenary, but many members are doubtful it will come to fruition.
Robson has had an extensive career in sports management. He was Essendon Football Club boss during the controversial supplements saga and also had been CEO at Hawthorn FC and Melbourne Victory.
