St Kilda coach Ross Lyon felt the need to post his first tweet in more than three years an hour before his side’s clash with Essendon, such was his frustrations with the situation inside Marvel Stadium.
The Saints coach took to the social media platform to have a crack at the venue and the AFL after both teams ran out to practice on wet grass.
The obvious issue here is that Marvel Stadium has a roof. Unfortunately, it wasn’t closed until 2.40pm on Friday, on a wet Melbourne afternoon.

“How good, Essendon legends game – looking for a Gary Moorcroft goal square hang,” Lyon tweeted.
“Oh no, might be hard. Marvel Stadium did not manage to close the roof before the rain came.”
His tweet was in relation to an Essendon legends game that took place as a curtain raiser to the AFL match.
Multiple reports have suggested both the Saints and Bombers are filthy with the venue and the AFL, with the Saints reportedly needing to call the AFL and ask for the roof to be shut on Friday afternoon.
“It won’t be the last we hear of it,” former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley told Fox Footy’s pre-game show.
“Whatever the spectacle of this game is, if the skills aren’t great or there are players falling over, it’ll be a point of conversation.
“It’s something you just shouldn’t get wrong.”

Lyon clearly felt the need to take to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his frustration. A platform he hasn’t used for so long, his bio still says he is a “former AFL coach. Current media personality”.
His last tweet came in 2022, paying respect to retiring Fremantle great David Mundy.
