LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – This weekend’s Lincoln Regional at Haymarket Park marks a comeback on a promise that local radio personality Jack Mitchell made about 18 years ago.
The Huskers last hosted a regional back in 2008 when Mitchell decided to bring an RV and camp out in the parking lot for the games, hosting live radio shows with KLIN throughout the weekend.
At the time, he made the decision to camp out every time Nebraska hosted a regional. Little did he know it wouldn’t happen again until 2026.
Now, as he celebrates 20 years with KLIN, Mitchell is following through on his promise, borrowing an RV offered up by a fan for the weekend and putting on his radio shows right outside Haymarket Park.
Mitchell said it was Husker nation who held him to his word, asking year after year if he’d bring the RV back, something he was happy to oblige.
“I like to bring people together,” Mitchell said. “There’s just so much stuff in media that takes people apart. And so one of the great ways to do that is celebrate our common fandom around here. And especially if we can have little goofy things like this that we’re talking about all the time.”
He also got to bring his kids this time around, spending the weekend with his son who was only three at the time of the last Lincoln Regional.
“Experiencing Husker sports with my son, and my daughter too, she’s not here today, it’s been one of the best things,” Mitchell said. “The way that the basketball team and the volleyball team, softball team and the baseball team have had success, it kind of expands the opportunities. And they’ve become big deals, in the way really that football was for us, among a lot of the Gen Z crowd.”
Mitchell said his favorite part so far has been reconnecting with the community and meeting people who listen to his show, hoping to stay in the RV the next couple nights as the Huskers continue into game two.
