Whole street evacuated as at least two homes burn in a major fire in Clontarf, Brisbane

Two homes have gone up in flames in Brisbane’s north triggering an emergency declaration and forcing residents across several streets to shelter indoors.

Emergency services were called to Weaber Street at Clontarf about 2.15pm on Saturday after a house caught fire, with the blaze quickly spreading to a neighbouring property.

At least ten fire crews are working to contain the flames, with thick smoke visible across the peninsula.

Paramedics are on standby but no injuries have been reported.

Queensland Police confirmed they made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) due to the scale of the incident.

“A PSPA was declared about 2.10pm with the exclusion zone encompassing Watson Street, Isobel Street, Enoch Street, Gerald Avenue, Wendy Crescent, Bright Avenue and Cornelius Street,” police said.

Residents inside the zone have been told to remain indoors and close windows, while members of the public are urged to avoid the area.

“A number of roads in the area may be affected. Residents and motorists are urged to avoid the area, to drive to conditions and follow police direction,” police said.

Police have since revoked the PSPA as of 4.19pm on Saturday.

“Police would like to thank the community for their assistance,” a statement said.

Firefighters remained on the scene for hours working to bring the blaze under control and protect surrounding homes. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
