You’d have got fairly decent odds on that when Gauff forced a tiebreak in the second from 5-2 down. But the Russian, who declared for Austria last year, looked to be struggling in the heat from midway through the second set, has dug out an impressive win. Hats off to the 28th seed.
The women’s singles champion of 2025 and world No 4 is out, and her remaining rivals eyes’ will be lighting up at the chance that has now materialised.

Gauff, having roared back at her opponent in the second from 5-2 down, looked much stronger. But now the Russian Potapova is battling just as hard. It’s 4-4 in the third and final set.

Kouame’s journey is over. He, and the home fans, do not get their deciding set. But what a sensational tournament it’s been from the 17-year-old. There will be many more to come.
He took out Marin Cilic in round one and Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in the second round, but the this third-round clash was a bridge too far. What entertainment for the fans on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Make that 8-9 Tabilo. Kouame is still fighting but he’s on the back foot … but he saves a fourth match point! It’s 9-9 and Kouame is still in with a shout of forcing a deciding set. We know what the Parisian fans want.

Now 7-8 Tabilo, and match point No 3 for the Chilean.
Another big serve from Kouame, and he has a straightforward chance to put a forehand away, but hits it into the tramlines, just! It’s match point Tabilo, but almost immediately, back to 7-7 in the breaker when Tabilo dumps into the net!
Tabilo can serve to create a match point … On second serve, Kouame hammers a big forehand long, and it’s match point Tabilo, Kouame to serve.
Kouame hammers down a wide ace! The crowd are loving it! That was superb. It’s 6-6 in the tiebreak, and 6-6 in the fourth.

Tabilo hits long. The crowd erupts. That’s 5-4 Kouame … can he force a decider. He clenches his fist and celebrates in determined fashion. But a classy serve-volley from Tabilo and it’s 5-5.
Gauff and Potapova are 3-3 in the decider, with a break apiece.
And now 3-3 … the home fans are right behind the 17-year-old from Sarcelles in northern Paris. The commentator just called him “the Frenchman” but surely he’s still a teenager … Now 3-4 to Tabilo.

Ooof! Tabilo winds up what looks like a winner to the corner, but Kouame is there in the flash and finds an angle back across court. That’s high quality … and Tabilo fluffs it. 3-2.
Kouame into a tiebreak with Tabilo. He needs this to stay in the competition … and it’s 2-2 as we speak.

Potapova goes down on her haunches after Gauff breaks her to -15. The Russian looks like she can’t believe it. But Gauff is coming for her and wants this in two sets.

Potapova can serve for the second set v the fourth seed. Gauff drills a sublime forehand down the line for 0-15. Then Potapova hits hopelessly long for 0-30 … and hopelessly wide for 0-40.
Gauff is really on top here, having been 5-2 down in this second set.

However, Gauff’s opponent is showing signs of beginning to wilt in the heat, and physically, Gauff is looking strong.

Wow, what a point at match point for Comesana. Berrettini clings on in a protracted exchange –15 big shots – Comesana hits long and it’s back to 13-13.
Make that 12-12. The tiebreak is approaching 20 minutes in duration.
On comms, they’re talking about the weakness of Berrettini’s backhand compared to his forehand … and on cue the Italian spoons a regulation forehand high, wide and not very handsome. 13-12 Comesana.

Cerundolo 5-4 v Landaluce now. The 24-year-old Argentinian has been at the second round of a slam before – the US Open in 2023 – and has exited the Australian Open at the first round (twice) and Wimbledon (once).
He’s closing in on a very special achievement, and a place in the last 16 at the French Open.
Berrettini and Comesana are into a tiebreak on Simonne-Mathieu. 7-6, 5-7, 6-7, 6-4, 6-6.
The wunderkid Kouame has lost control in the third against Tabilo: It’s 5-3 to the Chilean now. (6-4, 3-6, 3-5).
Ditto Gauff, who trails Potapova 3-0 in the second set having won the first 6-4.

And over on Court 7, Sinner’s conqueror, Juan Manuel Cerundolo, is locked in a fourth set with Martin Landaluce. 6-4, 6-7, 7-6, 4-3.
The commentators are remarking how for Cerundolo, now being on an outside court after his big day out – and huge win – against the world No 1 and overwhelming tournament favourite on Philippe Chatrier – it’s almost like playing two different tournaments. But, they say, he is applying himself just as well as against Sinner.

On Suzanne Lenglen, Kouame now leads Tabilo 2-1 in the third: 6-4, 3-6, 2-1.
Over on Court Simonne-Mathieu, meanwhile, and also in the men’s singles, Matteo Berretini is 4-4 with Franciso Comesana in the fifth and final set.

Kouame, having worked so hard to retrieve the break, has fallen a break down again and trails Tabilo 5-3 in the second set. So Tabilo is serving to level up the match at 15-all … advances to 30-15 and quickly 40-15 … and the Chilean lefty flings his forehand wide! He’s still got one more set point, though, and he takes it with a bruising ace down the T. Cue the sound of silence from the French crowd. It’s Kouame 6-4, 3-6 Tabilo.
Meanwhile Anne Keothavong, in the TNT Sports outdoor studio, is wearing an Arsenal scarf in the 30C heat. The former British No 1, who grew up in London, reveals she used to do tennis training on the indoor pitch at Highbury. There’s not too much tennis chat going on at the moment, but I can tell you Gauff is still a break down against Potapova, trailing 4-2.
Suzanne Lenglen, however, is still packed, with Kouame going through his first period of adversity, at 4-2 down in the second set. Perhaps his five-set, near five-hour win in the second round is starting to catch up with him, and the crowd are a little low in energy too. But they’re back on their feet when Kouame, at 30-40 on Tabilo’s serve, fires a forehand winner past the left-handed Chilean. Kouame leads 6-4, 3-4.
