Alex Cullen has quit his role as sports reporter on GOLD FM’s The Christian O’Connell Show, just under a year after he joined the breakfast radio show.
The Aussie presenter, who also delivers the afternoon news on Channel Seven, joined the national radio programme in July 2025 following his high-profile sacking from Channel Nine’s Today show.
Announcing the news on Monday morning, the 45-year-old explained he was struggling to juggle two jobs with raising his three young children, who are all aged six and under.
“The last year, it’s been so much fun juggling these three kids and two jobs,” he told O’Connell during Monday morning’s programme.
“It’s been chaotic, but a whole lot of fun…it’s really been wonderful.
“But look, the grind of holding down two jobs at both ends of the day was proving too much, and something had to give.
“I had some really serious conversations with my wife, Bonnie, and I’ve decided the time is right to put that early morning alarm clock away for a while and concentrate my efforts on my TV roles and my very energetic young family.
“I told the kids yesterday, I sat them down and said, ‘Guys, Daddy’s not going to be doing breakfast radio anymore,’ and they were so pleased.”
Cullen concluded his announcement by thanking O’Connell and their colleagues “for the laughs”, and GOLD FM listeners for “tuning in every day”.
O’Connell said it had “been a joy” to work with Cullen over the past year, but added he wasn’t surprised that his co-star had chosen to walk away.
“I did think when you initially joined the show, I wondered how long you were going to do it because it’s a lot,” the 53-year-old said.
“You’ve got a young family, three kids under the age of six, holding down two jobs.”
GOLD FM has confirmed Cullen won’t be replaced on the show. Instead, newsreader Patrina Jones will expand her role to deliver the sports headlines as well as the biggest news stories of the day.
Last year, Cullen made headlines when he was axed from the Today Show after accepting $50,000 from billionaire Adrian Portelli.
The Aussie accepted the money after Portelli said he would reward any journalist who referred to him by his new nickname, McLaren Man, instead of Lambo Guy.
Cullen used the new moniker during a live cross from Melbourne Park during the Australian Open and later posted the footage to his Instagram account.
Portelli responded by sharing a screenshot appearing to show the bank transfer, along with the message: “We have a winner, well played, sir.”
Following his sacking from the Nine Network after five years, Cullen said it had been a “very difficult time” and thanked his fans for “reaching out” with messages of support.
His wife Bonnie, who is a property reporter for Nine, appeared to weigh in on the scandal earlier this year following his successor Danika Mason’s broadcast from the Winter Olympics 2026 after drinking alcohol.
The 34-year-old apologised for the incident, but Bonnie seemed to comment on the network’s double standard.
“Well they sacked Alex Cullen for less,” one of her friends wrote on social media, to which Bonnie replied: “100%.”
