It’s no secret that Major League Baseball has long coveted a salary cap. The 30 franchise owners have spent decades gazing longingly at the other American sports, which all have successfully limited their highest-paid employees’ compensation.
But despite their deepest desires to fundamentally reshape the economic system that has powered MLB for the past half-century, those same owners have consistently stopped short of actually proposing a cap. They remember what happened the last time they tried: a 232-day player strike that resulted in the cancellation of the 1994 World Series and devastated the industry for years.
