Anthropic’s Jared Kaplan warns on the risks of powerful AI models and the race against authoritarian developers

There was a time when Anthropic co-founder Jared Kaplan was not sold on artificial intelligence. It was early 2010, and his friends (now colleagues) Dario Amodei and Chris Olah were getting excited about its potential.

Kaplan, a theoretical physicist, was sceptical until he saw AlphaGo, a program developed by Google to master the ancient board game Go.
