Giro d’Italia Women 2026 GC standings – Who is currently leading the race?

Race leader Anna van der Breggen (SD Worx-Protime) solidified her lead on stage 5 of the Giro d’Italia Women at the end of a day that saw significant changes to the GC standings as the mountains took their toll.

Van der Breggen finished second on the stage behind winner Demi Vollering (FDJ United-Suez) but formed part of a group of only four riders who survived in the lead and all gained time on the rest of their rivals.

Defending champion Elisa Longo Borghini (UAE Team ADQ) was the most significant name not in that group, losing 15 seconds – plus bonuses – to the winner, whilst last year’s runner-up Marlen Reusser (Movistar) lost 53 seconds and slipped down the rankings from second to

Second overall now is Vollering, up a spot with her win after stage 4’s TT, and she now sits at exactly a minute down on Vollering overall.

Antonia Niedermaier (Canyon-SRAM) is third, up one spot to now sit at 1:24.

The biggest gain on the day was for Isabella Holmgren (Lidl-Trek), who impressed in the lead group of four to gain time and move up to fourth overall, at 2:01.

Reusser struggled quite early on the penultimate climb, and whilst she limited her losses in the end, she slid down to fifth, now at 2:05.

Sixth at 2:12 is Longo Borghini – actually up two spots despite not being able to stay with the leaders – and Niamh Fisher-Black (Lidl-Trek) is in seventh, also up four spots, at 2:33.

The rest of the top 10 all dropped down the rankings after finishing in a chasing group, with Femke de Vries (Visma-Lease a Bike) in eighth, Monica Trinca Colonel (Liv AlUla Jayco) ninth and Urška Žigart (AG Insurance-Soudal) 10th. The gap from first to 10th is now 3:26.

Outside the top 10, a couple of riders made positive gains after losses in the time trial, with world champion Magdeleine Vallieres (EF Education-Oatly) the best example of that, climbing up 10 spots to 13th, though she still has a deficit of 5:25.

What to read next

After two difficult days of climbing, the gaps are already quite large at this stage of the Giro, with Van der Breggen, Vollering, Holmgren and Niedermaier quickly emerging as the strongest climbers, but there is still a lot of racing to go and time for things to change. The pink jersey’s one-minute lead is far from unsurmountable, especially against a rider like Vollering.

The racing continues on Thursday with stage 6, which is a mercifully easier day, almost pan-flat and not likely to bring any more significant GC changes.
