FASCINATING KING ‘WATCH’ AS VIC CLUBS STILL CRICLING

There remains a “watch” on star spearhead Ben King after he’s held off signing a contract extension with the Suns.

And Hawthorn and Geelong are still circling as potential destinations if King were to make a shock backflip to return to Victoria.

King has been mulling a two-year, multimillion-dollar offer with a six-year player option from Gold Coast.

While it’s been expected that the 25-year old would sign it and commit his future to the Suns, it’s believed King remains undecided on his future.

That comes despite King’s manager, Robbie D’Orazio from CDG Sports, flying up to Gold Coast this week to meet with his star client.

“There was a lot of talk around about him being about to re-sign for two years. That still hasn’t happened,” AFL Media’s Callum Twomey said on Gettable.

“His manager, Robbie D’Orazio, was on the Gold Coast this week having further discussions with King.

“King has kept his cards very, very close to his chest. He could turn around at any point and sign this two-plus six-year deal and just get it done, but that hasn’t happened yet and I don’t think it’s going to happen just yet.

“If I narrow it, I think it could be down to Hawthorn, if he leaves now.

“I think Geelong has interest there, it’s real. But if he comes back, I think Melbourne is the city he wants to be in and the destination.

“I’m watching that one with interest. if I was making a bet on it, I’d still have Ben King at the Suns. But not quite as close as we maybe thought.”

Seven’s Tom Morris is also watching with intrigue, but thinks Collingwood can be a ruled out as a suitor

“I’m just going to downgrade this from supremely confident to the Gold Coast being favourites to keep him,” Morris said on Agenda Setters.

“I don’t think he’s going to Collingwood, but he hasn’t made up his mind yet, and we’re now into early June.

“All the expectation from everyone around him is he stays at the Suns, but it’s not done yet and he hasn’t truly made up his mind. He’s still talking with his partner about where he wants to play next year.

“It’s a big watch, it would be a huge shock (if he left Gold Coast), but it’s not out of the question.”

KINGSLEY ON GREENE’S FUTURE

Giants coach Adam Kingsley admits he doesn’t know whether star skipper Toby Greene will stay at the club.

But if Greene were to leave to return to Victoria, Kingsley hopes Greene would take a leaf out of the NRL’s book and declare it “earlier rather than later.”

The 32-year old unrestricted free agent is considering moving back to his home state at season’s end, with the likes of Geelong and Hawthorn seen as possible landing spots for Greene to finish his career at.

With Greene set to think through his options over the Giants’ mid-season bye, Kingsley said he thinks Greene would “probably” tell him if the skipper did decide to leave the club.

“It won’t impact the way I communicate to Toby, it won’t impact the way he plays, he’s a full pro,” Kingsley said on Seven’s Agenda Setters.

“That’s what they do in the NRL up here, we do find it a little bit strange. But they seem to find a way and still move on and perform.

“So, I would expect Toby would certainly let us know earlier, rather than later.

“We’re very hopeful that he stays. He’s obviously a critically important player to us and our captain and a foundation member and really set the culture as to how it sits right now.

“We’d like to see him continue that.”

Asked if he thinks Greene will stay, Kingsley responded: “Well, I don’t really know.

“I think he’ll stay based on his actions and the way that he carries himself around the club. But, who knows?”
