Robert Irwin has added a few career notches to his belt in recent years and has revealed the true reason he just can’t stop working.
The 22-year-old son of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin is no stranger to the spotlight thanks to his famous, nature-loving family, The Irwins.
Lately, his career has taken him on a path that veers slightly away from four-legged friends, landing him hosting gigs on big-time TV shows.
Irwin hosted the recently axed Channel 10 show ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!’ alongside Julia Morris, and has also competed in the iconic reality show Dancing With The Stars, where he took out top spot with dance partner Witney Carson.
Although his calendar is already packed with commitments, the wildlife photographer just can’t say no when new opportunities arise.
And it seems it comes from more than just a place of passion.
Speaking to The Watchlist while on the set of MasterChef Australia, where he is appearing as a guest judge this season, Irwin revealed that being still “makes me physically ill”.
“I can’t stand being still; it makes me physically ill,” he said.
“And that’s not even an analogy. I actually get physically nauseous if I’m inside. I have to just always be going.
“If I don’t, I don’t sleep. I feel like I’m going to just pass out.”
Irwin added that no matter what else is happening, Australia Zoo remains his number one priority.
“I say yes to everything, but when I go home, the real work for Australia Zoo and my conservation projects begins,” he said.
“My day job starts when I get back, and I love that.”
When speaking about his approach to life, he shares the same zest as his late father, Steve Irwin, who was tragically killed by a short-tailed stingray while filming on the Great Barrier Reef.
“My approach is: if you’re going to do it, you’ve got to go all out,” he said.
Following the axing of I’m a Celeb, reports suggest that Irwin is being eyed by a major network for iconic hosting roles.
Among the opportunities reportedly being discussed is a potential hosting role at the TV WEEK Logie Awards, as well as involvement in future entertainment franchises across the Seven network.
Well-placed sources claim that Seven sees Irwin as a talent with broad audience appeal and long-term potential.
“Robert appeals to multiple demographics and has become incredibly valuable commercially,” one television insider claimed.
“He’s someone networks believe could front several major formats over the next decade.”
As for future roles beyond reality television and into acting, the young up-and-comer says never say never.
