KOTA KINABALU (June 8): The Fifth Infantry Division, Lok Kawi Camp (Team A) emerged as overall champion of the recent Mayor’s Cup 72nd Sabah Statewide Boxing Championships held at Damai Multi-Purpose Hall here.

The Army team topped the medal standings with a haul of four gold, three silver and two bronze medals.

The gold medallists were Isa Mohd Zulkifli, Mohd Akmal Danial Rosliza, Rasul Romeo and Mohammad Haikal Daniel Mohammad Ali.

Winning silver medals for the team were Mohd Azizan Moha Jis, Muhammad Fakrullah Ahmad and Muhammad Fahmi Mohd Ali. Alexander Clement and Maximus Rojies secured bronze medals.

Tuaran Boxing Association (Tuba) and Speed Strike Boxing Club (SSBC) of Tambunan finished joint runners-up overall. Both bagged identical haul of two gold, one silver and one bronze medals each.

Tuba medal winners were Abraam Doozaeil Rycall Kuinon and Clement Yong Look Loi (gold), Nathan Ivan Richard (silver) and Muhd Zulfaruesh Mauzzim Azlan (bronze).

SSBC secured their medals through Eddle Joel Geoffrey and Dann Joimi (gold); Jeffson Intang (silver), and Averory Brionie (bronze).

The official team medal tally only included results from the Elite category which was open to athletes aged between 19 and 40.

A total of 24 teams, comprising district associations, clubs and gyms, participated in the tournament which involved 153 athletes, coaches and team officials.

Youth Development, Sports Advancement and Creative Economy Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan officiated the prize-giving and closing ceremony.

Also present were the ministry Permanent Secretary Datuk Mansur Asun, Sabah Sports Board chairman Syed Ahmad Syed Abas and Sabah Boxing Association president Datuk Orlando Harumal.
