Bryson DeChambeau has put the ball firmly in the PGA Tour’s court regarding his potential participation with Team USA ahead of the Ryder Cup, and he’s voiced his anger over the ongoing dispute.
The two-time U.S. Open champion remains suspended by the PGA Tour following his move to LIV Golf in 2022, leaving him unable to compete in the Procore Championship in Napa, California, on Sept 11-14. That tournament represents the event U.S. captain Keegan Bradley had hoped to utilize as a final preparation before Bethpage Black (Sept. 26-28), where DeChambeau appears virtually certain to represent America.
“That’s up to the Tour and their decision to make”, declared DeChambeau. “It’s on them if they don’t let us become together as a team and play.”
DeChambeau’s comments emerged during LIV Golf’s Indianapolis tournament, scheduled for August 15-17, and following his absence from a Ryder Cup team dinner. The Crushers GC captain currently sits T-12 after one round of action, with 11-over players gradually closing in on Torque GC’s Sebastian Monoz, who commands the leaderboard at 12 under.
Bradley hopes that the political maneuvering blocking DeChambeau’s involvement would step aside for the forthcoming contest that has witnessed Team Europe prevail in 10 of the past 13 biennial battles.
Speaking at the BMW Championship, Bradley expressed his clear frustration with the circumstances.
In his opinion, the Ryder Cup should override any disputes between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. “Well, he’s suspended. And that’s out of my control”, Bradley stated.
“I thought that the Ryder Cup sort of transcends all of this. And really, the last thing on my mind is the PGA Tour-LIV stuff.”
While Bradley takes on the role of captain, Team USA will be vice-captained by Jim Furyk, Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker, and Gary Woodland. Scottie Scheffler, J.J. Spaun, and Xander Schauffele have all secured their spots on the team after the BMW Championship cutoff on Aug. 17. DeChambeau currently ranks fifth in Ryder Cup points and finished just below Russell Henley.
The LIV star is expected to either qualify outright or be one of Bradley’s six captain’s picks. Bradley has already highlighted his power, energy, and presence in the team room as reasons why he’s indispensable.
Rickie Fowler and Patrick Cantlay, who have previously represented Team USA during the event, both endorsed DeChambeau’s participation. Fowler is a five-time Ryder Cup veteran.
“Yeah, I would pick him too,” said Fowler. “I think it would be hard to find really any or many Americans that would argue that point.”
The LIV season wraps up in Indianapolis on Sunday, with Michigan hosting the final event a week later. DeChambeau remains the world’s No. 17 player after earning significant points for his 2024 U.S. Open victory, finishing as runner-up at this year’s PGA Championship, and securing fifth place at The Masters, which saw Rory McIlroy complete a career Grand Slam.
