Much of southern Australia is set to see widespread rainfall over the coming days as a cold front sweeps toward the east coast.
Sky News meteorologist Tamsin Green explained several fronts, which had swept through Western Australia on Monday and Tuesday, were forecast to track through South Australia and into Victoria and New South Wales..
She added they would likely bring significant falls to the country’s southern states on Wednesday.
“We’re seeing another good soaking across the east and the south-east over the next few days,” Green said.
“In terms of what this first front is bringing as it moves eastwards through midweek into tomorrow, that’ll be bringing some showers across Victoria and South Australia.
“The focus of that rain will really be targeting Tasmania, actually. So we’re looking at the more widespread threat and slightly heavier totals across the west of Tasmania.”
Looking at the forecast 24-hour rainfall totals across the south-east from 9am on Wednesday, Green explained much of the region would likely see “within the range of 10 to 30 millimetres of rain”.
“But some spots may be seeing locally higher totals than this,” she added.
Meanwhile, the Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds for Victoria’s Grampians, Otways Coast and Eastern Ranges forecast areas heading into Wednesday.
National forecast for Wednesday Sydney
Sydney is expected to be partly cloudy on Wednesday, with a medium chance of showers.
The mercury is set range between 12 degrees and 22 degrees.
Melbourne
A partly cloudy day has also been forecast for Melbournians, along with possible showers in the late afternoon and evening.
The city is expected to record a 14-degree low and 19-degree high.
Brisbane
Partly cloudy skies are expected in the Queensland capital – where a high chance of showers has also been forecast.
A minimum of 15 degrees and a maximum of 24 degrees are forecast in Brisbane.
Perth
A cloudy day has been forecast for Perth on Wednesday, as well as a medium chance of showers.
A seven-degree low and a high of 18 degrees have been forecast for the city.
Adelaide
A damp day is expected in Adelaide, with a very high chance of showers forecast throughout the day.
The South Australian capital is set to record a low of 13 degrees and a high of 17 degrees.
Canberra
A very high chance of showers has been forecast for Canberra, along with light winds.
A chilly low of five degrees and a high of 15 degrees are expected in the nation’s capital.
Hobart
Hobart locals can expect a cloudy day, with showers likely in the afternoon and evening.
A low of nine degrees and a high of 18 are forecast for the Tasmanian capital.
Darwin
A bright and sunny day is forecast for Darwin on Wednesday.
The mercury is expected to hit a high of 33 degrees.
