The reigning NRL premiers are on the verge of a sixth-straight loss, conceding five first half tries to trail 30-0 against the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Jai Arrow has been honoured at Stadium Australia before the match as both sets of players formed a guard of honour, after he was forced to retire from rugby league following his motor neurone disease (MND) diagnosis.

The Rabbitohs are wearing a special white jersey for the occasion.

How bad is it going for the Broncos?

Not performances from the defending premiers you’d expect. Have we seen such a weak subsequent season before ? Broncos seemingly on a downward spiral. Not sure of the remedy.

The struggles of the Broncos, the reigning NRL premiers, is bad.

The last time the reigning premier failed to make finals the next year was 20 years ago.

The Wests Tigers, after winning the 2005 premiership, finished 11th the next year.

Canterbury, after winning the 2004 premiership, also missed the finals the following year.

But since 2006, every NRL premier has made finals the next year.

*Melbourne won the 2009 grand final but was stripped of the premiership, and their points deduction penalty meant they missed finals in 2010

In what has been a tough season for the Brisbane Broncos, this might be the toughest.

On a five-match losing streak and needing to kick start their premiership defence, they have left in five tries to trail South Sydney 30-0 at half-time.

Three of those Rabbitohs’ tries came immediately after Broncos errors.

Brisbane has been punished for another mistake, and it leads to South Sydney’s fifth try.

A little chip kick from Aston Ward, I think it was a mis-kick, is caught by Cody Walker, who then offloads to Jamie Humphreys.

32′ Brisbane lose captain’s challenge

Brisbane has lost its captain’s challenge, and it’s a poor call.

Attacking the Souths goal-line, five-eighth Tom Duffy drops the footy in the play the ball.

It is a very poor error which wastes a great try-scoring opportunity.

And Duffy has compounded the error by convincing captain Adam Reynolds to challenge the call of a knock-on.

Duffy, I think, was arguing there was ruck interference.

There was not. Duffy dropped the ball in a poor moment, and now Brisbane has wasted its challenge.

29′ TRY: Alex Johnston has a double for the Rabbitohs

South Sydney has a fourth try.

Alex Johnston has a second try, off the back of the Antonio Verhoeven error.

Souths shift to the left. Cody Walker takes the ball to the defensive line, passes to centre Latrell Siegwalt and then Siegwalt tips on to Johnston for the try.

Siegwalt nails the conversion from the left touchline.

Poor from the Brisbane Broncos.

The visitors were trying to run the ball from deep in their own end.

There is a dropped ball in a tackle. I could not see which Brisbane player spilled the footy, but it was a very loose carry.

A few tackles later, David Fifita charges onto a short pass from close range and scores.

Latrell Siegwalt kicks the goal.

20′ Brisbane fail to catch a goal-line dropout

Things are starting to unravel for the Brisbane Broncos.

The visitors enjoyed a nice set, where they were able to put up an attacking kick at the Souths’ goal-line.

The Broncos forced a goal-line dropout.

But from the dropout, Josiah Karapani and Grant Anderson looked at each other, the ball bounced and then went out for a South Sydney scrum.

Fullback Jye Gray throws a big dummy, then runs between Brisbane defenders Adam Reynolds and Antonio Verhoeven.

A guard of honour formed for Jai Arrow

A lovely moment as the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Brisbane Broncos walk onto the field together.

Both teams form a guard of honour for Jai Arrow.

Arrow rings the Legacy Bell, a tradition at Rabbitohs home matches.

We have said it before on this blog, and I am sure I will write it again tonight — some things are bigger than footy.

Arrow is overcome with emotion, and no one can blame him.

This is a beautiful moment, as the crowd at Stadium Australia stand for him.

It is very hard not to get emotional.

I love rugby league.
