Jury comment

What appealed to the jury about Deiji Studios is the incredible consideration of a very compact space and subsequent creation of intimacy, which celebrates the product in quite a brave way. This was applauded by all members of the jury, who agreed the design of this loungewear store in Sydney’s Paddington demonstrates that small spaces can be incredibly rich and complex. The project itself comprises some very progressive ideas about the retail experience, encouraging visitors into its series of beautifully crafted small vignettes in order to more closely engage with the product. Deiji Studios’ displays and material palette are also super detailed, successfully promoting the product and strengthening the brand.

Design statement

Compact yet considered, the design embraces the inherent intimacy of the petite tenancy without compromising its sense of quiet luxury. Evolving principles established in Deiji’s Byron flagship, the language takes on a distinct new expression, its honey-hued timber detailing a physical embodiment our brief of a warm, generous retail experience.

Deiji is located in Paddington, NSW on the lands of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation
