Widespread rainfall is set to drench much of the country’s west and south as a cold front pushes across Australia’s southern coastline.

Severe weather warnings have been issued in both Western Australia and South Australia on Wednesday, with heavy falls expected to target parts of both states.

Examining the forecast, Sky News Weather Meteorologist Marina Neuman explained the weather system, which has already brought damp and gusty conditions to some regions in recent days, is expected to linger over the country’s south.

“So, this isn’t the end of it just yet,” Neuman said.

“This is a system that really began on Sunday, now, is continuing even as we head into our Wednesday morning.”

Neuman said rainfall across WA’s southeastern coastline is set to continue into Wednesday night.

“In fact, just (on) Wednesday alone, we could see an additional 50mm for that southeastern coast, bringing total rainfall potential over the next four days to an additional 50mm,” she said.

As the cold front moves east across the west and south of the country, Neuman explained widespread wet weather is set to eventually reach parts of New South Wales and Queensland on Thursday and Friday.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast possible damaging winds and heavy falls for Esperance on Wednesday, with a 50 per cent chance of at least 20mm of rain.

Port Lincoln is among parts of SA expected to see wet weather, with a very high chance of rain and a possible thunderstorm forecast for the city.

The BOM has issued a severe weather warning for heavy rainfall and damaging winds for parts of WA’s south-east on Wednesday.

“Six-hour rainfall totals between 30 and 45 mm are possible with localised falls up to 55 mm,” the warning read.

A severe weather warning for heavy rainfall has also been issued for a large chunk of SA, with the BOM advising downpours could lead to flash flooding.

National forecast for Wednesday Sydney 

Partly cloudy skies are expected over Sydney on Wednesday, along with light winds.

The mercury will likely range between a low of 13 degrees and a top of 22 degrees.

Melbourne 

Partly cloudy conditions are also expected in Melbourne, with a slight chance of a shower forecast.

The city is set to record a 15-degree low and a 20-degree high.

Brisbane 

Scattered clouds and a possible shower have been forecast for the Queensland capital.

A minimum of 15 degrees and a maximum of 23 degrees are expected.

Perth 

Perth residents could also see a shower on Wednesday.

A chilly low of five degrees and a high of 18 degrees have been forecast for the city.

Adelaide 

A wet day is expected in Adelaide, with a very high chance of rain and a potential thunderstorm forecast.

The South Australian capital is set to record a low of 15 degrees and a high of 20 degrees.

Canberra 

In Canberra, patchy morning fog and a slight chance of a shower have been forecast for Wednesday.

Temperatures in the city are expected to plunge as low as six degrees and reach as high as 18 degrees.

Hobart 

Showers will be likely in Hobart on what is expected to be a cloudy day. 

A low of nine degrees and a high of 26 degrees have been forecast for the Tasmanian capital.

Darwin 

Sunshine has been forecast for Darwin, along with possibly windy conditions.

A minimum of 22 degrees and a 32-degree maximum are expected on Wednesday.
