Nick Kyrgios’ grass-court campaign remains under a cloud after the Australian withdrew from the Halle Open with a right knee injury and missed out on an initial Wimbledon singles wildcard.
The 2022 Wimbledon finalist has played just two singles matches this season following his latest comeback from injury. Currently ranked No. 899 in the world, Kyrgios was not among the players awarded men’s singles wildcards when Wimbledon announced its first allocations on Wednesday.
Former Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka, former ATP Finals winner Grigor Dimitrov and British players Arthur Fery, Jacob Fearnley, Jack Pinnington Jones and Toby Samuel received main-draw entries, with two men’s singles wildcards still to be awarded.
Kyrgios showed flashes of his best tennis during his return at Stuttgart last week, defeating Frenchman Corentin Moutet 6-3, 6-4 before losing to Japan’s Sho Shimabukuro 6-4, 6-7(5), 4-6 in the second round.
While his singles participation at Wimbledon remains uncertain, Kyrgios is set to feature in the doubles draw alongside Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik.
Kyrgios has also confirmed he will compete at an Ultimate Tennis Showdown event in Rio de Janeiro from July 16-18.
Elsewhere, fellow Greek AustralianThanasi Kokkinakis suffered a first-round exit at the ATP Challenger event in Dublin. Kokkinakis was beaten by Swiss player Jérôme Kym 6-0, 6(7)-7(9), 4-6 after letting a one-set lead slip.
