GREENE ‘COMPLETELY LOCKED IN’ TO GIANTS … FOR NOW
Giants skipper Toby Greene says he hasn’t been moved to address teammates around his commitment to the club or his playing future.
Greene remains unsigned beyond this season and eligible for free agency, with the star forward linked in reports to Geelong.
“I haven’t addressed it with the playing group at all,” Greene told Fox Footy’s AFL 360.
“If you ask anyone from the club and if they thought that any of my actions or the way I’ve been leading or the way I’ve bought in to what we’re trying to do is any different to what it has been for the last 15 years, then I would put my hand up and say ‘this is a big issue’ – as it should be if that’s what your captain is doing. (But) it’s not.
“I am completely locked in and really passionate about where the footy club is going.”
Greene also said playing and living through trade speculation was a “unique” situation, considering he’s 32 years old and been at the Giants since the club’s inaugural season.
“It is what it is. I was just going to wait towards the end of the year and make a decision,” he said.
“I love the footy club, love the Giants and I am really confident about where we can go. That’s where it sits at the moment. We’re in a bit of a battle at the moment to make sure we finish the season in a good manner, so that’s all I’m focused on at the moment.”
‘COMPLEX BACKSTORY’ BEHIND BOMBSHELL BULLDOGS RUMOUR EXPLAINED
The Western Bulldogs “have absolutely no interest” in trading All-Australian ruck Tim English, according to CODE Sports reporter Jon Ralph.
Four-time premiership Hawk Jordan Lewis dropped a bombshell on Fox Footy’s On The Couch on Monday night, revealing English was “gettable” and claiming he’d be “surprised” if the ruck was at Whitten Oval next year because “questions are being asked at other clubs”.
Speaking on Fox Footy’s Midweek Tackle on Tuesday night, Ralph revealed the Dogs had “emphatically shut down any trade interest” in English and explained why he’d been linked to a potential move, despite being contracted until the end of 2029.
“I think Jordan was half-right in that the Dogs are aware he’d been shopped around in recent weeks, but for the right reasons,” Ralph told Midweek Tackle.
Could English be on the move? | 00:42
“The backstory is complex. Rudi, his wife, plays for the Melbourne Vixens. Her contract is up and there was a view that she might not get a new contract – and so: ‘OK, what happens if we have to move interstate? Would Tim potentially go with her?’ But she has just been told, as recently as Monday, that she will get a new two-year deal.
“Meanwhile, the Dogs are not interested in trading him at all. He’s an All-Australian ruckman, they are 7-2 this season when he’s playing.
“I don’t think he and Luke Beveridge are amazing friends. I think there’s been some frustration from his coach that he doesn’t play like Shane Mumford – but who plays like Shane Mumford? That’s a really specific skillset.
“Trade him? ‘No way.’ But it’ll be interesting, now that he’s maybe had some interest out there, whether it might froth up a bit more by the end of the season.”
FIVE CLUBS CIRCLING LIONS STAR
Dual premiership Lion Logan Morris is a man in high demand, with at least five clubs keen on acquiring Brisbane’s star goalkicker, reports AFL Media’s Cal Twomey.
Morris, who’s only just turned 21, has kicked 35 goals from just 13 matches so far this season and 112 majors across his 58 career matches.
Speaking on Footy Classified on Tuesday night, Twomey said Geelong, Collingwood, Melbourne, Carlton and Tasmania had “already expressed interest” in Morris.
“He’s out of contract at the end of next year, but his contract is going to be a massive talking point,” Twomey told Channel 9.
Lyon on BIG decision for Lachie Neale | 04:58
“Brisbane are keen to extend him as soon as possible, but he is happy to wait and see this through as it stands.”
Twomey reported the Devils would have the means to offer him the most lucrative deal, while the Magpies, Cats and Demons had “a real crack at him last time he was out of contract” and the Blues are on the hunt for a key forward.
Dual All-Australian Leigh Montagna last week told Fox Footy’s First Crack Preview that Morris “would be demanding $2 million”.
AND A FEW TRADE BITES …
– Ralph also reported on Midweek tackle that Bulldogs veteran Adam Treloar had “already told people around him that he’s going to go and play for Noble Park, where it all began, next year”.
– Eddie McGuire reported on Footy Classified that he’d spoken to Brisbane sources, who’d suggested they “expect him (Lachie Neale) to go to Collingwood” next year. McGuire added: “Brisbane are saying that – not Collingwood. That was really interesting to hear.”
– Talks between the Giants and in-form forward Jake Stringer “are about to ramp up”, according to Ralph, with club footy boss Jason McCartney to soon return from leave.
– Bulldogs defender Michael Sellwood “in the coming days will officially put pen to paper” on a two-year contract extension., reports Midweek Tackle host Lauren Wood.
