The nib Newcastle Knights NRLW side have gone down 30-14 to the Sydney Roosters at Polytec Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle showed trademark grit to work their way back into the contest multiple times, however the defending premiers proved too strong running out five try to three winners.

The Knights will re-group ahead of another huge, double-header clash against the Brisbane Broncos back on home soil next Sunday.

How it played out:

Before a ball was kicked, fullback Bo Vette-Welsh was a late casualty ruled out of the game with a knee injury. Lilly Ann-White replaced her at the back.

The Knights kicked off on Darkinjung country and were immediately given a set of six attacking the Roosters goal-line.

The Roosters would hold out the Knights and soon launched an attack of their own.

Roosters forward Jasmin Strange scored the first of the match in the 9th minute to give the home side an early lead.

The Tricolours were proving hard to stop through the middle and they would have their second of the afternoon on the 26th minute mark as Brydie Parker stepped back in off the wing to score.

Jesse Southwell produced a huge play with a 40/30 to swing the momentum back to the Knights.

Newcastle weren’t going to die wondering and would post a crucial try before the half-time break.

A huge defensive play from Sheridan Gallagher forced a repeat for the Knights and the side would make it count.

Jules Kirkpatrick managed to burrow under the Roosters defence and plant the ball down for the Knights first of the game.

The red and blue trailed the defening premiers 12-6 at the half-time break.

The home side were first to score after the break as Tarryn Aiken broke through the Knights defence.

Newcastle fought back as Georgia Roche willed her way to the line for the Knights second and reduced the score to 18-10.

Aiken posted her second of the game three minutes later to extend the Roosters lead back out to 14 points.

Tess Staines gave the Knights hope of a final charge towards the final whistle with her fourth try in Knights colours.

However it wasn’t to be as Olivia Kernick crossed over under the posts for the Tricolours to confirm the result for the Roosters.

What’s next:

The side return home for a massive clash against the Brisbane Broncos as part of a double-header at McDonald Jones Stadium. Tickets.
