Zach Thompson gives his top studs and value plays for today’s fantasy baseball slate on DraftKings, which starts at 7:10 p.m. ET.
Saturday night continues MLB’s Players’ Weekend with nine games on the main slate on DraftKings. The action starts at 7:10 p.m. ET with five games in the early wave and four more starting later in the night. Over half of the matchups are divisional contests, including the big matchup between the Padres and Dodgers, who are each 69-53 and tied for the division lead coming into the showdown. That’s just one of the many matchups to consider for your fantasy baseball lineup this Saturday, so let’s dive in and take a look at my top MLB DFS picks for Saturday night.
Overall, the weather forecast is pretty favorable coming into the day. The weather should boost the bats in Kansas City, San Francisco and Sacramento with warm temps and winds blowing out. Rain could create minor issues in St. Louis and Colorado, but it doesn’t look serious enough to cause a postponement, possibly just a late start. Be sure to double-check the forecast and lineups, though, before game time.

Pitchers
Stud
Blake Snell, Los Angeles Dodgers vs. San Diego Padres, $9,800: This should be a good one! The Dodgers took the first game of this showdown series and will give the ball to Blake Snell with a chance to reclaim the division lead. Snell has an extremely high ceiling but is high-risk since he has only made four starts all year and has a tough matchup against the Padres.
He has the upside to return value, though, after his impressive outing last week against the Blue Jays. In just his fourth start of the year, he spun five scoreless innings against the Blue Jays, racking up 10 strikeouts against the Jays, who are the hardest team to strike out in the majors. He posted 31.65 fantasy points in that outing and has over 18 fantasy points in each of his first two games back after missing time with shoulder inflammation.
When available, Snell has pitched well with a 2.37 ERA and 3.90 FIP. He has 18 strikeouts in his 10 innings back, so even though he is less likely to go deep in the game, he still has a good shot to produce good production as a boom-or-bust in this awesome Saturday night showdown.
Value
Zebby Matthews, Minnesota Twins vs. Detroit Tigers, $6,700: Matthews is another starting pitcher with a very high ceiling due to his strikeout potential, even though he’s in a less-than-ideal matchup. The young righty has gone 3-4 in his nine starts this season but has an impressive 57 strikeouts in 44 innings with a 30% K%. He does have a 5.11 ERA due to too much hard contact allowed, but his elite strikeout production gives him a high enough ceiling to overcome his runs allowed. He gave up three solo homers in five innings and took the loss in his last start, but his nine strikeouts still helped him earn 20.55 DraftKings points.
That total against the Yankees gave him over 20 DraftKings points in three of his last four starts, including a season-high 30.3 DraftKings points in his best start of the year against the Nats. Since returning from the injured list on July 19, he has 32 strikeouts in 25 innings but also has a 5.04 ERA and 3.51 FIP. Even though the Tigers have one of the best records in baseball, they have struggled on offense over the last month, hitting just .240 as a team with the third-highest K% in the majors in that month.

Stud
Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Dodgers vs. San Diego Padres, $6,500: If you have the salary to spend up for a premium bat, Ohtani is a great option in his matchup with Dylan Cease ($9,300). Ohtani went 0-for-3 with a walk and an RBI on Friday in the series opener for 4.0 fantasy points, but he had double-digit fantasy points in each of his previous eight games. He averaged 18.6 fantasy points per game during that run, which included five home runs in a stretch of six games.
In his career, Ohtani is 7-for-21 (.333) against Cease with four extra-base hits, including two homers. With his current form coming into the matchup and so much on the line, Ohtani is a great pick to come up clutch with a big night on Saturday.
Stud
Ketel Marte, Arizona Diamondbacks at Colorado Rockies, $6,300: Marte is another good pay-up play to consider as he and the Dbacks take on Chase Dollander ($5,000) and the Rockies at Coors Field. Dollander is one of the Rockies’ top prospects and has loads of long-term potential, but he has been knocked around this season, going 2-9 with a 6.35 ERA and 5.76 FIP. At home, he’s been even more hittable at Coors Field with a 9.37 ERA, a 1.96 WHIP and a 7.08 FIP.
Marte is 22-for-63 (.349) over his last 16 games with four doubles, three homers and a .422 wOBA. In those 16 games, he averaged 10.8 fantasy points per game with double-digit fantasy points in eight of those contests.
Value
Brett Harris, Athletics vs. Los Angeles Angels, $2,000: If you plan on going expensive with Marte, other Dbacks or Ohtani, you may have to go ultra-cheap in a few spots, and Harris is a good way to do that at 3B. He comes at the minimum salary but should be in a favorable matchup against lefty Tyler Anderson ($6,300) at Sutter Health Park.
The 27-year-old made his season debut on Friday night, going 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and 7.0 DraftKings points. He was called up to replace Gio Urshela, who was designated for assignment and should get a long look at the hot corner to see if he can handle the position next year.
Last year, Harris struggled in his first taste of the majors, hitting only .146 in 36 games, but he hit .282 in his 59 games in Triple-A this season with 12 homers, seven stolen bases and a .380 wOBA. He’s an elite defender, so the question is just if his bat is ready for the bigs.
OUTFIELD
Stud
Brent Rooker, Athletics vs. Los Angeles Angels, $5,600: Rooker at home against a lefty is almost always a good play since Sutter Health Park is such a homer haven. He’s cheaper than Ohtani or Corbin Carroll ($6,600), who are strong options, but Rooker still brings a great ceiling.
Rooker is hitting .252 with a .326 wOBA and five homers since the All-Star break. He’s hitting .284 with a .371 wOBA and 10 homers at Sutter Health Park this season, and he’s also hitting .330 with a .427 wOBA and five homers off southpaws. In addition to all those strong splits, Rooker is 5-for-14 with three extra-base hits and two home runs in his career against Angels’ starter Tyler Anderson.
Values
Michael Harris II, Atlanta Braves at Cleveland Guardians, $3,400: Harris got off to a brutally slow start to the year while the Braves dealt with multiple injuries and fell out of the playoff hunt. He has caught fire since the All-Star break, though, and is saving his season numbers with a strong second half.
He’s hitting a scalding .415 over his last 23 games with seven doubles, three triples, two stolen bases and six home runs during that span for a .495 wOBA and 225 wRC+. He has multiple hits in seven straight games, going 15-for-29 (.517) with three doubles, two stolen bases and three home runs, helping him average 16.6 fantasy points per game. He should be in a good spot against Slade Cecconi ($8,700), who has allowed multiple runs in eight straight starts and 19 runs in 30 1/3 innings in his last five outings.
Value
Angel Martinez, Cleveland Guardians vs. Atlanta Braves, $3,200: On the other side of that matchup, Martinez is another good bargain play. He usually bats second in the batting order against lefties in a premium spot between Steven Kwan ($4,000) and Jose Ramirez ($6,200).
The young switch-hitter has thrived against southpaws, hitting .311 against lefties with five homers and a .381 wOBA. He has added six stolen bases to his 10 homers on the year and has a high ceiling whenver he’s taking on a hittable lefty. He’ll be a good value against Joey Wentz ($7,200) on Saturday night, who has a 5.03 ERA on the year with a 4.11 FIP.
