A woman has been arrested and two men remain on the run after an alleged police chase through Sydney’s inner west ended in a suburban street.
Residents living in Lawrence St, Alexandria were given a rude awakening with one of the alleged offenders climbing onto a roof and holding police at bay.
Six police cars were earlier spotted in pursuit of a white Audi S5 as it drove from Newtown and through the M8 tunnel.
Police said officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command had earlier attempted to stop the Audi on New Canterbury Road, Petersham at 5.30am after it was seen leaving the scene of an alleged break and enter a short time earlier at Spencer Street, Sumer Hill.
Police said the car was reported stolen from Newtown earlier this month.
NSW Police riot teams and the dog squad swarmed Lawrence St, Alexandria, surrounding one of the homes.
“We hear a loud bang, bang, bang on our roof,” resident Arjun Benipal told NewsWire,
Fellow resident Gabriel Kidston said the pair ran downstairs and were outside.
“The cops were kind of shining their flashlights saying, ‘She’s up there, she’s up there, oh no, no, no, she’s up there, she’s up there’.”
He said they saw police bring out a woman in handcuffs about 10 minutes later.
“We heard talk of a male but we never saw the male,” Mr Kingston said.
Police said they arrested a woman after a short on-foot pursuit.
Another woman told NewsWire she had been asleep in her room on the second floor of her house when she was woken up by “loud bangs”.
“I woke up and looked out my bedroom window and saw a man running across the roof,” the woman said.
