Real Madrid are preparing for important changes inside their basketball section after finishing the season without a single trophy.
The club’s early exit in the Liga Endesa quarterfinals against La Laguna Tenerife has already triggered internal movement, with both front office and coaching structure now under review.
One of the first expected changes is the return of Juan Carlos Sanchez to a key leadership role in the basketball department, MARCA reports.
Sanchez previously ran Real Madrid’s basketball section for 15 years before stepping down last summer, when Sergio Rodriguez took over as sporting director. During his long spell in charge, he led one of the most successful eras in club history, winning 28 trophies.
Even after leaving his official role, Sanchez stayed close to the club as an advisor to Florentino Perez, sending reports and evaluations on the team’s structure and direction.
Now Perez is once again turning to him as the club looks to reset after a disappointing campaign. At the same time, uncertainty remains around Sergio Rodriguez, who still has a contract in place but no clear long-term future in the role.
The same situation applies to several members of the staff, including Martynas Pocius, Felipe Reyes, and Rudy Fernandez, who have been involved in scouting and basketball operations.
No trophy season leads to big reaction
Real Madrid ended the season without silverware for the first time in 15 years, a result that has forced the club to react.
The team did reach three finals this season, including the Spanish Supercup, Copa del Rey, and EuroLeague, but they lost all three.
Their closest moment to success came in the EuroLeague Final Four, where Madrid pushed Olympiacos to the edge and came close to winning the title. However, injuries to key players such as Walter Tavares, Alex Len, and Usman Garuba affected their team’s chances at crucial moments.
Head coach Sergio Scariolo also came under scrutiny after the season, but he is expected to remain in charge.

According to MARCA, Florentino Perez continues to support him, and with two years left on his contract, parting ways would also be financially difficult for the club.
Scariolo was appointed following a recommendation from Sanchez, even though Chus Mateo had previously delivered strong results, including six trophies in three seasons and a EuroLeague title.
