Titans rookie halfback Zane Harrison has orchestrated a miraculous last gasp victory with a field goal in the dying stages to pip the premiership-leading Panthers on Saturday night.

Local junior Harrison, only six games into his NRL career, came to life in the final 15 minutes when he laid on two tries and kicked the winning field goal in the 19-18 win.

“A star is born,” Fox League commentator Dan Ginnane declared after Harrison’s kick.

In a testament to his rising star, Harrison pulled off the impossible for the Titans who only managed 16 carries in the opposition 20 throughout the entire game.

“What a second half from young Zane Harrison… stands and delivers. What a moment,” Michael Ennis said while Ginnane added the victory was “one of the great Gold Coast Titans wins”.

While Harrison stole the show, the Titans’ win was undoubtedly built on their resilient defensive efforts.

The Titans managed to keep it within six points come half-time despite a dearth of possession and less than three sets in the Panthers’ half over the first 40.

They were lucky not to head to the sheds in lockstep when Jojo Fifita almost replicated his Origin heroics before dropping the ball over the try-line.

Fifita’s error was one of many for the Titans, and yet they still managed to score the first points of the second half in the 65th minute when back-rower Arama Hau capitalised from a handy Harrison short ball.

Harrison was at it again five minutes later when a three-man cut-out landed plum for Phil Sami to edge the Titans ahead for the first time in the game.

A seven-minute injury layoff and backline reshuffle following a gnarly ankle injury to winger Jensen Taumoepeau threatened to kill off the Titans comeback when Panther Lindsay Smith powered over to level the scoreline into the final five minutes.

But it would be Harrison who would have the last laugh against the Panthers, who while only scoring three tries set a new season record for most tackles in opposition 20 (61).

The Titans’ first win over the Panthers in seven years comes at an important juncture of their season.

While they’re next to no chance in featuring in finals football come September, they only play away from the Glitter Strip three more times this season as they look to continue to build their foundations under maiden-season coach Josh Hannay.

Recall required

Despite his team’s loss, Liam Martin may have given New South Wales Origin coach Laurie Daley no choice but to reevaluate his right back-rower choice for a third successive game.

Martin, who played the previous 15 Origins for the Blues prior to this year’s series, was ruled out of Game One with a knee injury and overlooked for Wednesday’s heavy loss to Queensland.

The fiery forward had the ball rolling early for the Panthers with a try that even Captain Charger wouldn’t have prevented and was busy all game, even providing the last pass for Smith’s late try.

With six of the Maroons’ tries starting on or conceded by New South Wales’ right edge, Daley could do worse than look to recall the proven Martin.

Bear watch

The Perth Bears’ well-publicised struggles to attract a marquee player continues to dominate headlines but they have found themselves a gem in Panthers front-rower Liam Henry.

Starting in the absence of skipper Isaah Yeo, Henry was head and shoulders the Panthers best and produced 184 metres, 30 tackles and four tackle breaks.

Henry will look to make the Bears’ forward pack his own when Perth enters the competition next season.
