SHANE van Gisbergen will line up in sixth position for tomorrow morning’s Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 from Dover Motor Speedway, after rain cancelled qualifying at the Monster Mile.
To determine the starting order, NASCAR utilised a “metrics” formula based on factors including championship placing and the most recent finishing position.
For van Gisbergen, two consecutive wins have assisted in elevating him up the starting order, despite sitting 26th in the regular season points.
While the Kiwi has already qualified for the Playoffs by virtue of his three race wins, his recent uptick in form has seen him move up the points table to now sit only 52 points off 16th-placed AJ Allmendinger.
With practice also rained out, van Gisbergen’s first lap in anger of the track in a Cup Series car is set to be in the race. Last year, he finished 18th in his lone Xfinity Series start at the venue.
Pole for the race was awarded to Chase Elliot.
The green flag for the race is scheduled for 4:17am AEST on Monday.
