An excerpt from Rebel Wilson’s memoir in which she detailed losing her virginity has been retold in a skit on a Broadway stage – and awkwardly it was read aloud by the man who took her virginity.
Mickey Gooch Jr – an American actor and comedian Wilson named as her first lover in her 2024 memoir Rebel Rising – inadvertently found himself on stage at the Shubert Theatre in New York, where he was put on the spot by fellow comedian Kathy Griffin.
While they were both stood in front of the audience at recent performance of the Celebrity Autobiography sketch show – where stars perform live readings of their peers’ memoirs – Griffin began to read from Wilson’s book, cheekily choosing the chapter titled “Late Bloomer”.
In this chapter, the Pitch Perfect star detailed meeting Gooch while filming the 2016 comedy How to Be Single and after one month of dating, she lost her virginity to him, aged 35.

“Micks, I know this might be news to you if you are reading this, but yes, I lost my virginity to you,” Griffin read aloud. “And a great shag you were.”
Despite not knowing that was the part in the memoir Griffin was going to orate, Gooch managed to keep his cool even hilariously punched the air when Griffin ad libbed the “great shag” part.
The performance marked Gooch’s first time on a Broadway stage – and he took the surprise excerpt in his stride.
“It was a pretty surreal way to make my Broadway debut,” he said after the show, as per Page Six. “I guess I popped my Broadway cherry, literally.”
In her memoir, Wilson explained that she was almost at her “highest weight” at the time she dated Gooch and she was convinced that “as a big girl, no one would ever truly find me sexually attractive”.
The Sydney-born star revealed she was motivated to lose her virginity after discovering her mother had breast cancer.
“Life IS short. I didn’t want to live my life without experiencing sex. Experiencing love. I Just put it out into the universe that I was finally ready. I was going to feel the fear and just do it,” Wilson wrote.
“I was going to sl*t it up with the next guy that came along – who also seemed like a suitable marriage candidate.”
Soon after learning of her mother’s diagnosis, Wilson was set up on a date with Gooch by her Pitch Perfect co-star Hana Mae Lee, and that she’d instantly found him “sexy”.
It was a month after they started dating that Wilson felt ready to sleep with him, and invited him to come to NYC to stay with her, during which they had sex for the first time.
Wilson said that afterwards she’d wanted to be with him “all the time”. However, their relationship ended six months later, although the pair have remained good friends.
