Haney turning to Davis leaves him subject to getting stripped by the WBO, which is expected in early July to order Haney to negotiate with mandatory and top-ranked contender Keyshawn Davis.
On June 5, the WBO informed Haney’s father and manager, Bill Haney, and the fighter’s attorney of his obligation to fight Keyshawn. Gervonta Davis, however, is not ranked among WBO welterweights.
Meanwhile, the father-trainer of top-ranked WBA lightweight contender Floyd Schofield Jnr told BoxingScene Monday he’s been informed the WBA will remove Davis as its lightweight “champion in recess,” later this week, freeing the 23-year-old Schofield Jnr, 19-0 (13 KOs), to arrange a WBA title shot versus second-ranked contender Lucas Bahdi, 20-0 (15 KOs).
